PRE BOARD EXAMINATION 2021 -2022

English Language & Literature (184)
Question Paper (Term 2) Class – X
Marking Scheme – Set 2

Marks
SECTION A – READING [10 Marks]
1 Read the passage given below. 5

1. Oats. A graint, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland

supports the people. —A Dictionary of the English Language by Samuel Johnson
(1755)

2. That, if you can believe it, is how the venerable Dr Johnson, in what was the
language’s guiding reference until the appearance of The Oxford English
Dictionary 173 years later, chose to define me. It has been a wild ride, and from
inauspicious roots. I began as a seed that grew in pods at the tops of towering, five-
foot-tall weeds called green oat grasses, which littered the wheat and barley fields of
yore.

3. A German immigrant grocer in Akron, Ohio, by the name of Ferdinand Schumacher

realized—long after the Scots had—that once removed from my hull, chopped and
cooked, I made a fine cereal. To process me, he figured out how to steam and roll
me flat so that I could be cooked more quickly. Then he experimented with selling
me in his small store.

4. At first, shoppers were resistant. But when the Civil War broke out and the Union
started buying me to feed its soldiers, demand went crazy. My reputation as an
affordable, healthy, stick-to-your-ribs food for humans took hold. Schumacher, who
came to be called the Oatmeal King, founded the German Mills American Cereal
Company to (barely) keep up with demand, and suddenly this weed became a very
viable crop.

5. When my grains are steamed and rolled into flakes that cook up in a few minutes on
the stove, I am ‘rolled oats’. ‘Instant oatmeal’, meanwhile, is made of extra-small
bits of ‘quick oats’, which are rolled oats that have been steamed and flattened
further for faster cooking speed. To produce the chewier ‘steel-cut’, producers
simply chop me into small, cook able pieces with blades or grinding stones, sans the
steaming and rolling.
6. I satisfy both your healthy and unhealthy urges. Healthy: In any form, I contain an
important type of fibre called beta-glucan, to which some of my cholesterol-
lowering powers have been attributed. Heart doctors prefer me steel-cut, since that
way I’m slower to digest, don’t spike your blood sugar

7. Less healthy: Americans have dessertified me via sugary versions filled with maple
syrup and the like that put me in a class with the rest of your sweet breakfast foods.

8. In 1994, the 600-person Scottish village of Carrbridge arranged a competition

among cooks in hopes of bringing their tiny town some visitors. Contestants were
given30 minutes to make the best steel-cut oats they could, using nothing more than
me and some salt and water. The event was a hit and became the World Porridge
Making Championship. The contest reveals that I have remarkable range from
chewy to juicy to tender and from nutty to carby.

9. Dr Johnson may not have seen my popularity coming, but I appreciate all signs of
how beloved I’ve become. In cities in the States and in Europe, there are restaurants
where all you can order is me with the toppings of your choice. Imagine that. I’m
now the headlining ingredient in modern-day eateries, despite having started as a
meal fit only for horses.

Kate Lowenstein is the editor-in-chief of Vice’s health website, Tonic.

Based on the understanding of the passage, answer any five from the six given below.

1. Why does oats consider its initial journey to be a ‘wild ride’?

horses. It was not auspicious for human consumption. Hence calls its

2. What did the German grocer realise about oats?
 Ans. Once removed from its hull, chopped and cooked, it turned to be a fine
cereal.
3. What enhanced the reputation/demand for oats in the market?

was affordable and healthy.
4. How does ‘Oats’ compliment itself to attract the attention of heart doctors?

spike the blood sugar.
5. How has Oats acquired a celebrity status over the years?
 Ans. there are restaurants where all you can order is me with the toppings of
your choice. Imagine that. I’m now the headlining ingredient in modern-day
eateries, despite having started as a meal fit only for horses.
6. Rewrite the following sentence by replacing the underlined word with a word
that means the same, from paragraph 2.
 In the park, on the bench, sat a respectable old man watching his
grandchildren play.

2 Read the passage given below. 5

Maruti Suzuki takes lead in PV exports with 151% rise

1. Chip shortage has led to production cuts and declining sales for Maruti Suzuki
India in the domestic market since the middle of 2021. However, the company’s
exports have been booming during this period, even beating rival Hyundai, which
was once the country’s top passenger vehicle exporter.
2. One of the reasons for exports rising vis-à-vis Hyundai is that while Maruti has
surplus capacity with three plants, the Hyundai plant is operating at almost full
capacity. Analysts say that with demand for Hyundai cars rising in India, the
company has deliberately cut down on exports as it has limited production capacity.

**PV- Passenger Vehicle; LCV- Light Commercial Vehicle; FY- Financial Year

3. The other reason for Maruti’s exports doing well, according to company officials,
is the relatively better supply of chips used in export models compared to the
variant used in domestic ones. ‘There are different types of chips- export versions
and domestic versions. We could not get enough chips for domestic versions. But
we could get additional volume of export versions. That is why the volume of
exports is increasing,” Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO, told FE.
4. Rahul Bharati, executive director, corporate affairs, Maruti Suzuki India, said since
the electronic components used in export models are different, “we have been
fortunate that our exports were not impacted.”
5. Maruti’s expense rose 151% to 2,11,880 units during the April- February period of
the current fiscal, Hyundai Motor India exported 1,18,573 units, up 28.44% year-
on -year, during the same period. This is also the first time when Maruti’s export
crossed the two-lakhs units’ mark.
6. Maruti decided to mount a strong effort towards increase in exports. Bharti said
about two years ago, “With the strong support of our parent, Suzuki Motor
Corporation, we worked on all fronts- expand the export product portfolio, reach
out to more geographies and expand distributor network.”
Based on the understanding of the passage and the visual input, answer any five
questions from the six given below.
1. What is the difference in the growth % between PVs and LCVs? 1*5
2. What is the mile stone achieved in export in FY 22?
3. What is the challenge faced by Maruti Suzuki India in the domestic Market in the
middle of 2021?
4. What factor has helped in the surge of MS exports?
5. Find the word from the passage which means the same as -
a year as reckoned for taxing or accounting purposes.
6. Whose support helped Maruti to gain a strong fold towards increase in exports?

Ans :
1. 14.3%
2. 2 lakh units
3. Shortage of chip
4. The relatively better supply of chips used in export models compared to the
variant used in domestic ones.
5. Fiscal
6. The strong support of Maruti’s parent, Suzuki Motor Corporation
