Energy Science & Engineering - Introduction

Energy exists in multiple forms including potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, and nuclear. It can be transferred between systems and converted between forms but cannot be created or destroyed. This principle is known as the conservation of energy. Energy science and engineering focuses on improving energy efficiency, developing sustainable energy technologies, and managing energy systems while minimizing environmental impacts. It applies principles of physics, chemistry, math, and economics. Energy engineers develop the most effective and sustainable methods for operating buildings and manufacturing processes. They audit energy use and suggest advanced systems for lighting, insulation, heating, cooling, and ventilation to improve efficiency.

Energy Science & Engineering (CE (ES) 302)

Energy- Energy, in physics, the capacity for doing work. It may exist in potential, kinetic,
thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, or other various forms. There are, moreover, heat and
work—i.e., energy in the process of transfer from one body to another. After it has been
transferred, energy is always designated according to its nature. Hence, heat transferred may
become thermal energy, while work done may manifest itself in the form of mechanical energy.
All forms of energy are associated with motion. For example, any given body has kinetic
energy if it is in motion. A tensioned device such as a bow or spring, though at rest, has the
potential for creating motion; it contains potential energy because of its configuration.
Similarly, nuclear energy is potential energy because it results from the configuration of
subatomic particles in the nucleus of an atom.
Energy can be neither created nor destroyed but only changed from one form to another. This
principle is known as the conservation of energy or the first law of thermodynamics. For
example, when a box slides down a hill, the potential energy that the box has from being located
high up on the slope is converted to kinetic energy, energy of motion. As the box slows to a
stop through friction, the kinetic energy from the box’s motion is converted to thermal energy
that heats the box and the slope. Energy can be converted from one form to another in various
other ways. Usable mechanical or electrical energy is, for instance, produced by many kinds of
devices, including fuel-burning heat engines, generators, batteries, fuel cells.
Energy science and engineering or energy systems engineering is a broad field of engineering
dealing with energy efficiency, energy services, facility management, plant engineering,
environmental compliance, sustainable energy and renewable energy technologies. Energy
engineering is one of the more recent engineering disciplines to emerge. Whatever approach
we are going to follow, we need to understand that we must not affect the environment
surrounding us. It is basically a combination of knowledge from the fields of physics, math,
and chemistry with economic and environmental engineering practices.
The main job of energy engineers is to build the most effective and sustainable methods to
operate buildings and manufacturing processes from the civil engineering point of view.
Energy engineers audit the use of energy in those processes and suggest ways to improve the
systems. This means suggesting advanced lighting, better insulation, more efficient heating and
cooling properties and overall air circulation of buildings. Although an energy engineer is
concerned about obtaining and using energy in the most environment-friendly ways, their field
is not limited to renewable energy like hydro, solar, biomass, or geothermal. Energy engineers
are also employed by the fields of oil and natural gas extraction. Human beings have been
transferring energy from one form to another since their use of fire. It is quite understandable
from the law of conservation of energy is that energy can only be transformed from one form
to another. The efficiency of the transfer of energy is a new field. The oil crisis of 1973 and
energy crisis of 1979 brought to light the need to get more work out of less energy. The United
States government passed several laws in the seventies to promote increased energy efficiency,
such as United States public law 94-413, the Federal Clean Car Incentive Program.
This subject is included in your syllabus with many potentials. Some universities, are having
this subject as another course. In this emerging field, so many research works are going on all
over the world.
