Learning Competency:

Illustrates an experiment, outcome, sample space and event. (M8GE-IVf-1)

Do you know that…?

Probability is the mathematical term for

the likelihood that something will occur, such as
drawing an ace from a deck of cards or picking
a green piece of candy from a bag of assorted
colors. We use probability in daily life to make
decisions when we don't know for sure what the
outcome will be.

Overview:

Probability is a branch of Mathematics that deals with uncertainty. It is a

measure or estimation of how likely it is an event will occur.
In understanding probability, we should be familiar with the following
terms associated with it.
1. Experiments - These are activities such as tossing or flipping a coin or
picking a card from a standard deck of cards without looking which could be
repeated over and over again and which have well-defined results.
2. Outcomes—These are the results of an experiment.

3. Sample Space - These are the collection or a set of possible outcomes
of a random experiment
4. Event - It is any subset of a sample space. For example, when you roll a
die, there are 6 possible outcomes which are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Getting an
even number includes 3 outcomes; these are 2, 4, and 6. “Getting an even
number” is called an event.
5. Sample Point - It is an individual outcome of an experiment.
Illustrative Examples:
1. Aleen and Aleph are playing snakes and ladders.
Aleen rolls a die once.
A. How many possible outcomes Aleen would have?
Answer: 6 (A die has six faces with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
number of dots.)
B. What is the sample space of rolling a die once?
Answer: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} (Since sample space is the set of all possible
outcomes, thus, we have the six faces of the die.)
C. How do you consider getting an even number in rolling a die?
Answer: Event
D. What do you call 5 which is one of the outcomes in
rolling a die?
Answer: Sample point
2. Amber flipped two coins once.
A. How many possible outcomes Amber would have?
Answer: 4 (Since each coin has two outcomes, a head
and a tail, we will have 4 combinations of outcomes: Head Tail

Head-Head, Head-Tail, Tail-Head and Tail-Tail.)

B. What is the sample space of flipping two coins once?
Answer: {HH, HT, TH, TT} (Since the sample space is the set of all
possible outcomes, thus, we have these 4 combinations.)
C. If Amber will get HH, what do you call this outcome?
Answer: Event
D. What do you call each outcome in the sample space?
Answer: Sample point

3. Adrian rolled a coin and a die at the same time.
A. How many possible outcomes Adrian would have?
Answer: 12 (Since a coin has two possible outcomes:
head and tail; a die has six possible outcomes: 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, and 6, we have twelve combinations: Head-One,
Head-Two, Head-Three, Head-Four, Head-Five,
Head-Six, Tail-One, Tail-Two, Tail-Three, Tail-Four, Tail-Five and Tail-Six)
B. What is the sample space of this experiment?
Answer: {H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6}
C. How do you consider getting H1 in rolling a coin and a die
simultaneously?
Answer: Event
D. What do you call each outcome in the sample space of Adrian?
Answer: Sample point

4. Jersie has 1 peso coin in his pocket. He tosses the coin twice.
A. How many possible outcomes are there?
Answer: 4 (Since each coin has two possible outcome: head and tail, we
have four combinations: Head-Head, Head-Tail, Tail-Head and Tail-Tail)
B. What are those possible outcomes?
Answer: { HH, HT, TH, TT } (Since Aleph tossed the coin twice, we have
these combinations.)
C. What do you call this set of possible outcomes?
Answer: Sample Space
D. What do you call each outcome?
Answer: Sample Point
E. Did he do an experiment? Why?
Answer: Yes, because experiment has well-defined results.
