Math 1 Exercise No. 4 Trigonometric Functions

This document provides trigonometric differential formulas and examples of their applications: 1. It lists 9 common trigonometric differential formulas for finding derivatives of trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic, and power functions. 2. It includes 4 examples that demonstrate using the appropriate formula to find the derivative of various functions involving trigonometric operations like sine, cosine, tangent, and their powers and combinations. 3. The examples show setting the function equal to variables and applying the correct differential formula along with the basic derivative rules to systematically derive the solution.

Trigonometric Differential Formulas

1. d(sinu) = cosu du
2. d(cosu) = -sinu du
3. d(tanu) = sec²u du
4. d(secu) = secutanu du
5. d(cscu) = -cscucotu du
6. d(cot) = csc²u du

but remember the Differential Formulas:

1. d(c) = 0
2. d(x) = dx
3. d(cu) = cdu
4. d(u+v) = du+dv
5. d(uv) = udv+vdu
u vdu−udv
6. d( ¿=
v v²
n n−1
7. d(u ¿=n u du
du
8. d(√ u ¿=
2 √u
1 −n
9. d( n ¿= n+1 du
u u

(Ex.1) Find the derivative of y = cos2x (formula no. 2)

Solution: d(y) = d(cos2x) (we let u = 2x)

d(y) = d(cosu)

dy = -sinudu

but u = 2x and du = 2dx

dy = -sin(2x)(2dx)

dy
therefore, =−2 sinx (ans.)
dx

(Ex. 2) Find the derivative of y = sin²(2x+1) (whooh!!! Nothing seems like it from any formula….)

Okay, let a = 2x+1

Then y = sin²a
or y = (sin a)² (Hmmmm?...seems like formula no. 7 or power formula)

Anyways, POWER FORMULA is one of the most commonly used formulas in calculus.

Going back…

y = (sin a)²

d(y )=d[ (sin a)²] let u = sina then use power formula d( un ¿=n un−1 du

dy = d(un ¿ , where n = 2
dy = d( un ¿=n un−1 du , but u = sina and du = cos a da

dy = 2(sin a)2−1(cos a da)

u du

but a = 2x+1 & da = d(2x)+d(1) = 2xdx + 0

dy = 2sin(2x+1)cos(2x+1)(2xdx)

dy
= 4xsin(2x+1)cos(2x+1) (ans.)
dx
(I can accept this answer but you may simplify this further..)
Using sin2Ѳ = 2sinѲcosѲ (Double angle formula from your Trigonometry)
and let Ѳ = 2x+1
dy
= 4xsinѲcosѲ
dx
dy
= 2x(2sinѲcosѲ)
dx
dy
= 2x(2sinѲcosѲ)
dx
dy
= 2x(sin2Ѳ) but Ѳ = 2x+1
dx
dy
= 2x[sin2(2x+1)]
dx
dy
= 2xsin(4x+2) (ans.)
dx

dy
(Ex. 3) Find of y = 2sin³5x (here is a little bit of mind calculation…)
dx

d(y) = d(2sin³5x) u = sin5x, n=3

dy = (2)(3)(sin5x)²(cos5x)(5dx)
u du

dy
= 30 sin²5x cos5x (ans.)
dx

dy
(Ex. 4) Find of y = sin2xsecx
dx
using d(uv) = udv + vdu
u = sin2x; du = (sin2x)(2dx)
v = secx; dv = secxtanxdx

dy = sin2x secx tanx dx + secx sin2x 2dx

dy = sin2x secx(tanx + 2) dx
dy
= sin2x secx(tanx + 2) (ans.)
dx

Exercise no. 4
dy
Find of the following functions: (use only 1 method)
dx

1 1
1. y = x+ sin 2 x
2 4
1
2. y = sin ²4 x + cos 8 x
2
3 3 1
3. y = x + sinxcosx+ cos ³ xsinx
8 8 4
4. y = sin ⁡(x+ 4)+cos ⁡( x−4)
5. y = 3tan2x + tan³2x

ans. 1. cos²x 2. 0 3. cos4x 4. cos2x 5. 6sec42x
