Summary

In conclusion, our group agreed with proposing modified drones to aid people
after “The Big One” occurs. Using a drone is a solution that can overcome problems like
road blockages, electricity generators being shut down, lack of available authorities to
distribute goods, possible stealing of distributed goods, and managing cases of fire
emergencies. Most of the drones today comes up with a controller, which makes it easy
to use during dangerous times. The drone’s model that we picked comes up with a built-
in screen and camera, enabling us to utilize the drone efficiently.

Background and the Problem

If you have the capability to do something about the response to catastrophic effects of
the earthquake, what will it be? Our country is situated within the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire”.
As a result, we frequently experience earthquakes with different amount of magnitude and
intensity. According to PHILVOCS “The Big One” may already occur anytime. It is predicted that
this earthquake will have a magnitude as high as 7.6 magnitude. If the earthquake were to
occur, it will lead to a catastrophic effect mainly to Metro Manila and the nearby areas and
provinces.

The said occurrence of the earthquake will result into numerous negative effects. It is
predicted that the Big One will cause injuries and deaths of citizens due to buildings collapsing.
Earthquakes can also initiate fire which might result to further damage and destruction. The
destruction of infrastructure will also cut off the water supply. Additionally, established
communication lines might also be cut off lasting for weeks and even months.

By the time that the earthquake happens, these scenarios will negatively affect the
citizens’ wellbeing. It might cause panic and emotional distress due to the lack of resources and
necessary means to survive.

In order to provide a solution, we have created an aid which could help the people within
the affected areas. We propose a product that will help victims of the said event. Our proposed
solution will help to provide essential supplies like food, water and first aid kits. It will also help to
send alarms and signals if fires were to happen. Our proposed project will be developed in order
to give an assuring assistance and increase the survivability of the people evacuating.

Beneficiaries

Citizens of Metro Manila and nearby areas that are going to be affected during “The Big
One” Earthquake.

Proposed Solution to the Problem Presented

Provided that the roads may be possible blocked we hereby suggest the use of drones
and utilize it during the aftermath of “The Big One”. The drones are going to be used for the
following purposes: to deliver essential supplies, generate electricity, and the send warning
signals of fire detection.

It is also understood that stealing and hoarding of supplies might take place. This is why
the drones can deliver the supplies like ready-to-eat food, water bottles, and first aid kits. The
first aid kits will include bandages, Betadine, and emergency blanket and a pack of face masks.
The drone also contains a fire censors to send out alarms when there is a fire emergency and
cameras are also attached to the Drone.

The Holy stone drone is the model that we will use as a reference as of creating the
attachments. A built-in camera comes with the said drone while and a wireless controller as
well. A cellphone can be connected to the controller to monitor the video from the drone’s
camera. An x-shaped holder made of carbon steel or stainless steel beneath the drone’s body is
attached by screws to be able to deliver the food and first-aid kit packages. A solar panel above
the body to generate electricity, and fire sensors attached at the corners of the body.

Methods/Details of the Solution

1. Visiting the areas that will be affected during “The Big One” Earthquake
2. Consulting for sponsorships and help from the National and Local branches of the
government to generate sufficient budget.
3. Discussion of the drone model and its attachments and scouting for materials that will
satisfy the given budget. (Php15,000 is the estimated cost for each modified drone)
4. Contacting agencies and organizations that can support the creation of the modified
drone.
5. Purchasing of raw materials required to create the project.
 6. Production of drones with the help of different organizations.
7. Testing of the drones until is meets the required purposes and perform them
successfully.
8. Distribution of the completed drone models to different regions that might be affected by
“The Big One”.

There are many ways we can use a drone. Its not just only for fun or any other outdoor activities. Drone
is very useful especially in time of crisis, for example;

>Search and rescue – we can use the drone for search for and provision of aid to people who are in
imminent danger or distress.
>drones repeatedly and accurately delivered medical supplies faster than other methods without
additional risk to personnel or manned airframe.

making the item valuable.

Similar to our lovely drones, they are valuable devices that will care and guide the
people until they are evacuated.
