Date: 25.04.2023
Submission Format:
A word processed report using 1.5 line spacing must be submitted. The font size should be 12 and should
be in the style of Times New Roman. All drawings and attachments should be clearly labelled. Completed
assignments (stapled hard copy printed on both sides) must be handed in on the submission date in
accordance with the procedures outlined in the student handbook. You must write the report in your own
words; copy and paste directly from the information source must be strictly avoided. Where
applicable Harvard referencing system must be used.
Unit Learning Outcomes:
LO1. Describe the main elements of an electronically controlled industrial system.
LO2. Identify and specify the interface requirements between electronic, electrical and
mechanical transducers and controllers.
LO3. Apply practical and computer-based methods to design and test a measurement system.
LO4. Apply appropriate analytical techniques to predict the performance of a given system.

Scenario: You work as a junior control system engineer at a renowned company which
specialises in developing control systems for a large variety of different commercial and industrial
products. Your job is to develop or improve existing control systems for better performance.
Task 1
The Plint control rig in room B17 is an industrial grade plant which can be used to study the control
of various industrial processes such as Level, Flow, Pressure and Temperature. Apart from open
loop and closed loop systems the Plint control rig also allows cascade and ratio control.
There are two Fuji controllers in the control rig and both are not functioning properly. Since the
controllers are obsolete now, your supervisor has decided to upgrade the system with PLC and
SCADA. Since you are familiar with PLC systems your supervisor has given you the following
tasks:
1. Design and test the flow, level and temperature measurement systems in the Plint Rig
using PLC/SCADA of your choice. Write the PLC program for the acquisition of the different
signals and display them in proper format and units on the SCADA screen.
2. Explain the use of practical and analytical methods in creating and testing the
measurement systems.
3. Comment on the accuracy, resolution, repeatability, stability, sensitivity and response time
of the designed measurement systems taking into consideration the performance of the
PLC system.
4. Interpret the characteristics and behaviour of the existing electronic measurement system
in the Plint Rig.
5. Critically evaluate the performance of an ideal measurement system compared to the PLC
acquistion and measurement system that you have designed.

You have been given the task to study a machine and come up with recommendations.
Upon investigation, you find out that a particular machine with feedback control can be
mathematically modeled as follows
1. Sketch Nyquist and Bode Plots and prove that the system is stable.
3. Management is evaluating adding another component to the same machine as they have
been informed that the new addition will increase the productivity of the machine. Upon
calculation, you find out that with new addition ,the system will have a transfer function of
3 2
50( s +2 s +3s+8)
G ( s) = 3 2
(4 s -3 s +11s+10)
Prove to management (on technical basis) whether the system will be stable or not after the
addition of new component. If not, provide justified recommendations to improve the performance.
You may use MATLAB.
Task 3
Explain how IoT is changing industries in their journey to Industrie 4.0 paradigm with examples of
industrial use of IoT (IIoT).
