STATION

Speed refers to how fast an object is moving as a scalar quantity and is the distance covered over a period of time, while velocity is a vector quantity that includes both speed and direction of motion as it represents the rate of change of an object's position over time. An example is given of speed as 25 m/s and velocity as 25 m/s west to illustrate the difference between the two concepts.

STATION 1

SPEED & VELOCITY

Read the paragraph below about speed and velocity.
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to "how fast an object is moving." Speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object
covers distance. A fast-moving object has a high speed and covers a relatively large distance in a short amount of time. Contrast this
to a slow-moving object that has a low speed; it covers a relatively small amount of distance in the same amount of time.
Example: Speed= 25m/s
Velocity is a vector quantity that refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position." As such, velocity is direction aware.
When evaluating the velocity of an object, one must keep track of direction.

Example: Velocity= 25m/s, West
