Required Task 3: Mentor-Mentee Collaboration

1. What are the different issues addressed by the legal bases of the K to 12 Curriculum? Which among
them affects you the most as a teacher?

The different issues addressed by the legal bases of K-12 curriculum are issues in curriculum
development, the curriculum is outdated, lack of academic research and inability of students to achieve
21st century skills. The spiral curriculum of the K-12 is the most challenging part of the curriculum for me
because as a major in Biology, I have to teach other branch of science like physics. I have to study other
field of science so I can equip myself with the competency I am expecting my students to achieve as
well.

2. What do you think are the top three factors that are given emphasis by the different K to 12 laws and
orders? Why do you think so?
For me the top three factors that are given emphasis in the K-12 laws and order are: learners,
teachers and the interest to adhere in global education standard. K-12 program was created primarily
for the leaners. It is to gear them up for the future. Its purpose is to nurture learners holistically in order
to provide readiness in the future. These are the factors given emphasis by the different K-12 laws and
order because these are the areas where the old curriculum needs development and changes.

Required Task 1: Case Studies

Case 1: You have a transferee learner who only speaks her mother tongue. As a result, your learners
cannot communicate with her properly and the transferee learner feels left out. What can you do as her
teacher?

Because language limitations can make anyone feel reluctant, it is the teacher's obligation to
reach out to the student. Don't wait for him or her to ask for help. To overcome these linguistic barriers,
the instructor may match the transferee student with one of her more knowledgeable classmates. As
new pupils confront the expected hurdles, this knowledgeable companion can act as a guide. Another
option is to label classroom objects. This can assist students not only understand classroom routines, but
also improve their conversation abilities. The teacher can also meet with parents and provide them
advice on how to teach their children the new language at home.

Case 2: You have a learner wanting to take up engineering in college. Upon checking his grades, you
have learned that he has not been good in Mathematics. What can you do to help the learner?

There are a variety of ways in which the teacher might help the student excel in mathematics. A
teacher should instill confidence in children as they are solving math problems. Another thing the
teacher must do is encourage children to ask questions and create an environment where curiosity can
flourish. The more students who seek explanation, the better, because this indicates that they are
paying attention and learning. Authentic problems that increase students' motivation to interact with
math are another technique to help them get better at math. Students' motivation and comprehension
are increased when they are taught how to apply mathematics to real-world problems.
Case 3: One of the features of the K to 12 Curriculum is spiral progression. Upon seeing your learners’
pre-test results, you have realized that they are yet to master last year’s competencies. What will you do
to have them meet the requirements of the new level?

Before the teacher move on to the new level competencies, a short review is a must in order to
ensure that all the required competencies from the previous level is met. The teacher may provide a
schedule on the regular teaching schedule in order to address learning gap. Since the K-12 program is a
spiral progression, it means that the competencies continues from the lowest level to a higher level with
increasing difficulty. This indicate that students will find it difficult to learn the competencies in higher
level without mastering all the required competencies from the previous level. A review is an important
way to address this problem.

Case 4: You have a class which has a sizable number of over-aged learners who have taken the grade
level multiple times. How will you decide on the learning plan considering your other learners?

A varied activity must be provided in order to cater diverse learners. The teacher needs to
ensure that these activities are suitable to the age and understanding capability of his/her leaners. The
teacher can also provide group task so that students can collaborate with each other. Group activities
develop learner’s initiative towards a particular task, therefore it will enable learners to lead and follow
instructions. Collaboration is also important as it help the students to give their ideas and opinions
which helps learning to take place. Learners who are older will develop a sense of responsibility for their
learning. They will feel involved and appreciated, which will motivate them to achieve better in class.

1. Study the conceptual framework found in the curriculum guide and reflect on the guiding principles
and philosophies your subject area is anchored on. Are there concepts that are new to you? Which
guiding principles or philosophies do you think are reflected in your current teaching practices?

 Yes, the concept is kind of new to me. The guiding principles that are reflected in my teaching
strategies is being constructivist teacher.

2. Study the core learning area/learning area standards of your subject area. If you are teaching senior
high school, look for the course/subject description. For Kindergarten and ALS, you may refer to the
Introduction or the description of learning strands. These portions in the curriculum guide give you a
broad idea of expectations and/or expected outcomes of the learning area/course/subject. List down
key words/concepts to help you remember the core learning standards.

 Scientific Skills
 Technological Skills
 Environmental literacy
 Science Inquiry Skills

3. Familiarize yourself with the content and performance standards. How could they help you in
planning your lessons?

 Content standards helps “What do learners want to know, be able to do, and understand?”
while the performance standard answers that question “How do we want them to use their
learning or understanding?”. This helps me in my lesson planning because it enables me to meet
my objectives for the lesson.

4. Study the curriculum matrix/guide. You will see that it contains the content standards, performance
standards and learning competencies. How are the learning competencies related to the content and
performance standards? Which do you think could be met in a short period of time (within a lesson) and
which are expected to be attained in a longer period of time?

 The content standard should be met in a short period of time because its main focus is to
identify what concept the students should learn and how the students will understand it. On the
other hand, the performance standard takes a longer time to achieve since its focus on a deeper
manner of application of skills learned.

Teacher Gemma gives 4 ungraded quizzes in each unit of study. The quizzes are framed sequentially to
have an accumulated record of student success on the unit test. The quizzes are scored (though not
included in the unit grade) so that students can identify where they need more study and where they
are already successful. This is an indicator that Teacher Gemma can gauge where she will need to spend
more time and energy with her instruction to help students be successful on the unit test. Using this
approach, Teacher Gemma has been able to document significant gains in student achievement in her
classroom, nearly closing the achievement gap entirely with 95% - 98% achievement ratings in all of her
units of study.

1. Teacher _______ was asked to write a module on entrepreneurship. Since the expected learning
modality is home-based, she is having a hard time going about the module because its subject requires
community immersion of business concepts. On a regular school year, entrepreneurship learners are
asked to sell in school fairs but this year all extra-curricular activities are cancelled.

 I will tell the teacher to think of an activity that will simulate the actual scenario of selling a
product in the entrepreneur subjects. I would also recommend her to use video presentation.
Live selling through facebook or kumu is also a best option.

2. Teacher ______ is tasked to write a module for Grade 10 Mathematics. As an experienced teacher,
content is not a problem for him anymore. He has a bank of assessments and activities that are time-
tested. Despite these factors, he worries about the fact that his assessments are prone to leakage and
cheating which may result in problematic learning outcomes.

 I will advise the teacher to change some of the questions. The teacher can use the same
assessment given that it will target the same competency. S/he also needs to change the
options and the ordering of the item to prevent leakage.

going to school so she can help in the family’s rebuilding process – an advice she resents but is inclined
to accept. She informs her adviser Mrs. Reyes about her situation. What help can Mrs. Reyes extend to
Riza?

 Mrs. Reyes can use her influence to ask for help or donation to people in order to help her
student Riza. She can use social media platform in asking for help. She can also go to barangay
and municipality to extend help for Riza. The more help Riza receive, the faster the rebuilding
process, which means she can go back to school as early as possible.
