Vents and Traps
Pipes put in place to allow air to travel to or from a either to produce an airflow
within a drainage system or to shield trap seals from back pressure and siphonage.
VENT PIPE
A pipe or hole that ensures air flow through a plumbing system and releases the
downward pressure put on trap seals.
WET VENT
In section 901 states that each plumbing fixture trap, barring any additional
requirements made by this Code, shall be shielded against back pressure and siphonage.
Air circulation shall be assured throughout all parts of the excreta drainage system by
using vent pipes installed in compliance with this Chapter's standards and just as
specified by this code.
The diameter of an individual vent shall not be less than 32 mm nor less in size
than one-half (1/2) the diameter of the drain to which it is connected. Fixture unit load
values for drainage and vent piping shall be computed from Tables 7-2 and 7-3 not to
exceed one third (1/3) of the total permitted length of any vent may be installed in a
horizontal position. When vents are increased one (1) pipe size for their entire length, the
maximum length limitations specified in this table do not apply.
Exception: When connected to a common building sewer, the drainage piping of two (2)
or more buildings located on the same lot and under on ownership may be vented by
means of piping sized in accordance with Table 7-5 provided the aggregate cross-
sectional area of all the vents is no less than that of the largest required common building
sewer.
904.2
The length of horizontal portion of a vent may exceed one-third (1/3) of the total
length of vertical and horizontal portions as limited by Table 7.5 provided the vent is
increased to one pipe size larger for its entire length.
906.1
Each vent pipe or stack through roof (SVTR) shall extend its flashing all around
and the stack vent shall terminate vertically not less than 15 cm above the roof nor less
than 0.3 meter from any vertical surface nearby.
906.2
Each vent opening shall terminate not less than three (3) meters from, or at least
0.9 meter above any openable window, door opening, air intake or vent shaft; nor less
than 0.9 meter away from any lot line, alley and street boundary lines.
906.3
Vent pipes shall be extended separately or combined, of full required size not less
than 15 cm above the roof or fire wall. Flagpoling of vents is prohibited except where the
roof is used for purposes other than weather protection
906 4
Vertical vent pipes for outdoor installations shall extend to at least 3 meter distant
from any part of the roof that is used for other purposes and shall extend not less than
2.1 meter above such roof and shall be securely stayed.
910.1
The length of the vent piping and the total number of fixture units connected to it,
as specified in Table 7-5, shall be used to calculate the size of the vent piping. Each
individual vent must have a diameter that is at least one and a quarter inches (32 mm) in
diameter and at least half (1/2) the diameter of the drain to which it is attached.
Additionally, one or more vent pipes must have an aggregate cross-sectional area that is
greater than the largest required building sewer, as determined from Table 7-5, in order
to properly vent the drainage piping of each building and each connection to a public
sewer or a private sewage disposal system.
910.2
Any minimum sized vent must only have one-third (1/3) of its total allowable
length, as per Table 7-5, installed horizontally.
1001.1
Each plumbing fixture, excluding those with integrated traps, must have a separate
waterseal trap of an approved type. On a trap arm, only one trap may be present at a
time.
1001.2
However, if the waste outlets are not more than 0.75 meters apart and the trap is
centrally located when three (3) compartments are installed, one trap may serve a set of
not more than three (3) single compartment sinks, laundry tubs, or lavatories that are
adjacent to each other and in the same room. If a permitted type of pump discharges the
fixtures or appliances, the depth requirement may be relaxed.
1001.4
The vertical distance between a fixture output and the trap weir must be as small
as practically possible, but the length of any fixture's tailpiece must never be more than
0.6 meters.
1002.1
Except when otherwise specified in this Code, each plumbing fixture trap must
have a properly placed guard against siphonage and back pressure. vent hose. A vent
pipe system installed in compliance with the requirements of this Code must ensure air
circulation in all areas of the drainage system.
1002.2
Each fixture trap must have a protective vent that is positioned so that the
developed length of the trap arm from the trap weir to the inner border of the vent must
not be less than twice the diameter of the trap arm, but must instead fall within the range
indicated in Table 10-1.
1002.3
A trap arm may change direction without the use of a cleanout when such change
of direction does not exceed ninety (90) degrees.
Exception: For trap arms 76 mm in diameter and larger, the change of direction not
exceeding 22 no cleanout is required and for change of direction greater than 22° a
cleanout is required at the bend
1002.4
The vent pipe opening from a soil or waste pipe, except for water closets and
similar fixtures, shall not be below the weir of the trap.
Slope 2% or 20 mm/meter
The developed length between the trap of a water closet or similar fixture measured from
the top of closet ring (closet flange) to inner edge of vent shall not exceed 1.8 meters.
Each fixture trap must have a water seal that is at least 51 mm deep and at least
102 mm deep, unless the Administrative Authority determines that a deeper seal is
required due to unique circumstances. Traps must be installed straight and level with
regard to their water seals.
Section 1006 - FLOOR DRAIN TRAPS
Floor drains must be connected to traps that can be easily cleaned and are large
enough to function well for their intended purpose. The drain inlet must be placed such
that it is always visible. Such drains ought to be fitted with an authorized backwater valve
when they are exposed to the reverse flow of sewage or liquid waste.
Except in cases where it is not deemed required for safety or sanitary reasons by
the Administrative Authority, floor drain or similar traps directly connected to the drainage
system and subject to occasional use shall be provided with an approved automatic
means of maintaining their water scale. When automatic trap priming devices are
installed, they must have an accessible shut-off valve and be serviceable.
Section 1011- GREASE TRAPS
1011.1
An approved-type grease trap complying with the provisions of this section must
be installed in the wasteline leading from sinks, drains, and other fixtures or equipment in
establishments such as restaurants, cafes, lunch counters, cafeterias, bars and clubs,
hotels, hospitals, sanitariums, factory or school kitchens, or other establishments where
grease may be introduced into the drain when the Administrative Authority determines
that waste pretreatment is necessary. For individual, there is no need for a grease trap!
or for any private living accommodations
1011.2
1011.3
1011.4
The allowed flow rate for each grease trap required by this Section must be more
than the total number of connected fixtures indicated in Table 10-2. The total number of
fixtures that can discharge into any such grease trap cannot be more than two and a half
(2%) times the approved grease trap flowrate listed in Table 10-2. No more than four (4)
separate fixtures may be connected to or discharged into any one grease trap, and any
grease trap installed with an inlet more than 1.2 meters lower in elevation than the outlet
of any fixture discharging into such grease trap must have an approved rate of flow that
is not less than fifty (50) percent greater than that given in Table 10-2. For the purposes
of this Section, the term "fixture" shall mean and include each plumbing fixture, appliance,
apparat.
1011.5
Every fixture that discharges into a grease trap must be separately captured and
vented in accordance with regulations. When the horizontal distance between the fixture
outlet and the grease trap is less than 1.2 meters and the vertical tailpipe or drain is less
than 0.75 meters, an approved-type grease trap may be utilized as both the grease trap
and the fixture outlet for a single fixture.
10116
By routinely clearing out the collected oil and settling solids, grease traps are kept
in optimal functioning condition. No such accumulated grease may be put into the sewage
system, either public or private.
1011.7
No grease trap or grease interceptor with a water jacket shall be permitted for
installation or operation
1011.8
Depending on which is greater, each grease trap must have an approved water
seal with a minimum depth of 51 mm or a maximum diameter equal to the diameter of its
outlet.
The developed length between the trap of a water closet or similar fixture
(measured from the top of the closet ring [closet flange] to the inner edge of the vent) and
its vent shall not exceed six (6) feet (1829 mm).
