part varies as x2 . Given that the temperature on first day is 7°C , on eighth day is 28°C
and on ninth day is 39°C .

(a) Express T in terms of x . (3 marks)

(b) Is it possible such that the temperature of city X is 2°C ? Explain your answer.

Gordon puts a sphere inside the cylinder such that sphere inscribed in cylinder. The height
and the radius of the cylinder are r cm and h cm respectively.

(b) If the volume of the cylinder is 128π cm3 . Find the volume of the sphere.

(c) Gordon melted the sphere and it becomes water. Find the water depth in the cylinder.

(a) Find the median, range and mode of the distribution. (3 marks)

(b) Ivan found that the mean typing speed is (30 + y) words per minute.

(i) Find x and y . (3 marks)

(ii) The typing speed of two more students are added. If the range, mean and the
median of the distribution do not change after adding the data, find one
possible set of the typing speeds of these two students. (2 marks)

13. Let f ( x )=2 x 3 +9 x 2 +7 x −11 . When f ( x ) is divided by 2 x 2 + mx+n , the quotient
and the remainder are x +3 and mx + p respectively, where m , n and p are constants.

(a) Find the values of m , n and p . (3 marks)

(b) Let g ( x ) be a polynomial with degree 2 , where the coefficient of x 2 is q and


q is a constant. When g ( x ) is divided by x 2 −(m+ n) x−m , the remainder is
mx + p .

(i) Prove that x 2 −(m+ n) x−m is a factor of f ( x )−g ( x ) . (3 marks)

(ii) If q is an odd number, are all the roots of the equation f ( x )=g ( x )
integers? Explain your answer. (2 marks)

14. The following figure shows a parallelogram ABCD . P is the mid-point of AD such that
NP⊥AD also AB⊥MN . In ∆PDN , Q is a point on ND such that PQ⊥ND .

(a) Prove that ∆PQD ~ ∆NPD . (2 marks)

(b) Given that PD = 60 cm, PN = 80 cm and MB = 92 cm.

(i) Find QN . (2 marks)

(ii) The point X is added into the figure (not shown in figure) such that
∆DPN ~ ∆XMB . Find the least possible area of ∆NCX . (4 marks)

15. The equation of the tangent to the circle C at (1 , 1) is y=3 x−2 . If the circumference
of the circle is 8π , find the y-coordinate of centre(s) of C . (4 marks)

16. There are 12 players of different heights in a basketball team. 5 players are randomly
chosen from the team to attend a training course. Find the number of combination such that

(a) the tallest person is chosen, (1 mark)

(b) the two shortest players are not both chosen, (2 marks)

(c) at least 3 out of the 5 tallest players are chosen. (2 marks)

17. Ivan plans to build a hotel which has two types of rooms: Type A and Type B . Each Type
A Room can accommodate 2 persons and each Type B Room can accommodate 4
persons. Each Type A room and each Type B room occupies 60 m2 and 80 m2
respectively. The maximum capacity of the hotel is 200 persons and the total area occupied
by the rooms is at most 4800 m 2 . Profit for each Type A room is on average $1000 per
day and each Type B room is on average $1800 per day. Let x be the number of Type A
room and y be the number of Type B room.

Write down all the above constraints for x and y . Using the graph, find the number
of Type A room and Type B room so that the total profit per day is maximum also find the
maximum total profit per day. (6 marks)

18. James wants to walk on a wire from a building AB with height 50 m to another building
ED with height 75 m. D , C , B are points on the same plane, so that ∠DCB = 110° and
the area of ∆ACB = area of ∆DCE . Given that Frankie at the position C in which his
distance to D is 100 m. Suppose MC is perpendicular to BD .

(a) Find BD , AE and MC . (4 marks)

(b) If James arrives at P , the above of M . Find the angle of depression of Frankie from
James. (3 marks)

19. In a game, new enemies arrive every minute. Let E(n) be the number of new enemies who
arrive in the nth minute since the start of the game. Given that E ( n )=k +abn , where k ,
a and b are positive constants and n is a non-negative integer. At the beginning, there are
50 enemies. When n = 2 , there are 125 new enemies. When n = 4 , there are 425 new
enemies.

(a) (i) Express E(n) in terms of n . (4 marks)

(ii) Express the total number of enemies in the cth minute, in terms of c .
(3 marks)

(b) The back-up force arrives every minute since 10 minutes after the game has started.
Let F(m) be the number of new back-up force who arrive in the mth minute since
the start of its first arrival, where m is a non-negative integer. Given that
F ( m )=25+27(4m ) . When m = α , the total number of back-up force is more
than the total number of enemies. Find the least possible value of α . (6 marks)
