Answer all questions. Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes.

1. Given z = f (x, y) = 2 + x2 + (y − 1)2 .

(i) Find its domain and range. [2 marks]

(ii) Sketch the level curves for z = 2, z = 3 and z = 5. [3 marks]

(iii) Sketch the traces of the graph on x = 0 and y = 1 planes.

Hence, sketch the surface of the function. [5 marks]

∂z ∂z
2. Given z = f (kx2 −ky 2 ), where k is constant. Show that y +x = 0.
∂x ∂y
[3 marks]

3. Let z be defined implicitly as a function of x and y by the equation

y 1 ∂z
xeyz + 3ztan−1 + ln x2 + z 2 = 1. Find

4. Volume of a cone is given by V = πr2 h. If the radius r is expanding at
3
the rate of 0.3 cm/s and the height h is reducing at 0.1 cm/s, approximate
the rate of change of volume when r is 5 cm, and h is 20 cm.

[4 marks]

5. The rate of flow, Q of a fluid through a pipe of diameter, d and a length,

pπd4
L is given by Q = where p is the pressure difference between the
12L
ends. The value of L is measured with a maximum percentage error of
0.5% while the maximum percentage error in p and d are 2% and 0.1%
respectively. Find the maximum percentage error in calculating Q.

[5 marks]

6. Find all critical points of f (x, y) = 3x3 + y 2 − x + y and classify each

critical point as a local maximum, local minimum or a saddle point by
using partial derivatives. [5 marks]
