report 5 Excellent resources. Time is taken to describe the finer details of water potential to enable
students to understand that 0 is the highest value (pure water) and that this becomes negative once
solutes are dissolved. Then the potato pieces will be removed, the surface solution removed using
paper towels and then they will be re-weighed. That is because in the potato the water is more
concentrated than in the 20% concentration, so water molecules moved out from the potato to where
the water is less concentrated. This is because the measurements may slightly vary between scales.
Nor does it matter if you write the definition as one sentence or three sentences. This leads the
water to move along the root cell into the leaf, and so therefore the water constantly moves to areas
of lower water concentrations. If I then have time afterwards I will repeat this experiment again as
to obtain a second set of results. When the concentration of sucrose outside the cell is the same as
the concentration inside the cell, the mass will remain the same. This is because the cell is fully
plasmolysed and no more water can leave the cell. This would mean every potato piece would be the
same mass making it a fairer test. My preliminary experiment had many problems of which I created
by myself. This is because the water molecules pass from a high concentration, i.e. In the water
itself, to a low concentration, i.e. In the potato chip. Therefore, the chips in higher water
concentrations will have a larger mass than in higher sugar concentrations. So therefore this proves
that the apple strip contains more concentrated cell sap than the potato tissue. That is because water
diffuses from a region of relatively high concentration to one of lower concentration. The graph is a
curve that slopes downwards and does not go through the origin. That is because water is more
concentrated than this solution and less water molecules diffused into the potato than before.
Osmosis is the passage of water from a region of high water concentration through a semi permeable
membrane to a region of low water concentration. From right to left the first two points on the graph
are very spread out indicating that there was a large change in the mass. I succeeded in finding and
proving out that as the concentration of a solution is increased, the change in mass decreases until it
goes under its’ initial mass. I had to be very careful whilst cutting the potato as the scalpel is
exceptionally sharp. In very dilute solutions, animal cells swell up and burst: they do not become
turgid because there is no cell wall to support the cell membrane. It does show that the potato pieces
in the beakers with high sugar concentrations did shrink and lose mass because osmosis took place.
For instance if one of the potato chips was 1cm longer the surface area of the chip would be larger
and there would therefore be more space for osmosis to occur. It shows that the potato cells increase
in mass in solutions with a high water concentration and decrease in mass in solutions with a low
water concentration. This is because the water molecules pass from a high concentration, i.e. In the
water itself, to a low concentration, i.e. In the potato chip. Therefore, the chips in higher water
concentrations will have a larger mass than in higher sugar concentrations. This is because the potato
chip is becoming as flaccid as it possibly can, and so the change in mass of each molar concentration
is becoming closer and closer together. Bundle GCSE Biology: Osmosis, Diffusion and Active

NOW Save for later Not quite what you were looking for. When the concentration reaches above
0.75 M, there appears to be no further water loss, suggesting that the cell is fully plasmolysed.
As this happened, the potato lots its stability and size, it became flaccid. That is because in the potato
the water is more concentrated than in the 20% concentration, so water molecules moved out from
the potato to where the water is less concentrated. A stomata is a plant pore that lives on the plant
leaf surface. It shows that the potato cells increase in mass in solutions with a high water
concentration and decrease in mass in solutions with a low water concentration. This will hopefully
produce more accurate results from which I will be able to draw a more accurate conclusion. This
leads the water to move along the root cell into the leaf, and so therefore the water constantly moves
to areas of lower water concentrations. I will measure the mass in grams. The potato chip will be
measured before it is put in the solution, and after. True, it will, but then one drop of similar strength
caustic soda will take you back to pH 7 and two drops would take you to pH 9. Also, I was pleased
with the comparison between my prediction and main method. The larger quantity and concentration
of water in the outer solution means the larger amount of water will enter the potatoes cell by
osmosis. This gave me secondary set of results which gave me a more accurate view on the changes.
At this point, the net exchange of water is zero and there is no further change in the liquid levels.”.
In concentrated solutions, water is sucked out of the cell by osmosis and the cell shrinks. However
with all this said I think that the experiment was truly successful and I was very pleased with the
complete comparison of my results with my initial prediction. Water molecules are free to pass across
the cell membrane in both directions, but more water will come into the cell than will leave. If
percentage recovery is increased and feedwater pressure remains constant, the salts in the residual
feed become more concentrated and the natural osmotic pressure will increase until it is as high as
the applied feed pressure. This is because the water molecules pass from a high concentration, i.e. In
the water itself, to a low concentration, i.e. In the potato chip. Therefore, the chips in higher water
concentrations will have a larger mass than in higher sugar concentrations. The graph is a curve that
slopes downwards and does not go through the origin. However, at some point the solutions will
have more solutes than the potato so it will begin to lose water. My insulin page will tell you more
about other homeostatic mechanisms. Another similar material often recommended is dolomite,
which is a mixture of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. Plants to some degree can
control the osmotic pressure inside their roots. In very dilute solutions, animal cells swell up and
burst: they do not become turgid because there is no cell wall to support the cell membrane. I had to
be very careful whilst cutting the potato as the scalpel is exceptionally sharp. Bundle AQA KS4

of the 2016 AQA Biology specification. This is where no osmosis is taking place, both the potato and
the solution have an identical molar concentration. However if I was to repeat the experiment I
might well increase the time of the result to allow more osmosis to happen and possibly find out the
saturation point of the chips. All through this period, there will be no change in mass, length and
volume because the net movement of water will be zero, so no osmosis has occurred throughout this
period. Petri dish two, 0.25M, Petri dish three, 0.50M and Petri dish 4, 0.75M, Petri dish 5,1.00M,
Petri dish 6, 1.25M sugar solution. Leave all the experiment to run for 1hour 45minutes. We also
repeated the experiment three times so we are sure to get accurate and fair results.
When they take up water by osmosis they start to swell, but the cell wall prevents them from
bursting. For example if one of the potato tubes were to be one cm longer than the other tubes, the
surface area of the tube would be larger so there would be more space for osmosis to occur. This is
because the potato chip is becoming as flaccid as it possibly can, and so the change in mass of each
molar concentration is becoming closer and closer together. When they take up water by osmosis they
start to swell, but the cell wall prevents them from bursting. Review 5 Select overall rating (no

planned and conducted investigation. With less water the mass of the potato after 45 minutes should
decrease, so it would be lighter. For a fair test, we placed pieces of the potatoes which all had the
same mass (3.7g) in different concentrations of solution. My graph fits in with my prediction of the
experiment graph. At 15 and 20% concentration, the change in mass will go lower. This pattern
carries on through the graph, and even more mass is lost, as more water moves out of the potato into
the solution. Water molecules are free to pass across the cell membrane in both directions, but more
water will come into the cell than will leave. It shows that the potato cells increase in mass in
solutions with a high water concentration and decrease in mass in solutions with a low water
concentration. Weigh each chip and note down the starting mass, before placing 1 chip in each of the
solutions. Throughout the experiment, I used a measuring cylinder, which is not always precisely
accurate. This is because the cell is fully turgid and no more water can enter. This did mean my
overall percentage increase might have been slightly different, as these results would have affected
them. The potato pieces will then be placed in the different test tubes and then left for 30 minutes.
We could’ve been more accurate in obtaining evidence i.e. use cleaner equipment free of
contamination, more time to carry out the experiments as this will give us more reliable results. For
weighing of each potato piece, I could have measured it on a more accurate scale like 0.000 instead
of 0.00. Get this resource as part of a bundle and save up to 36% A bundle is a package of resources

each piece and make sure they are of identical mass, it is important this stage is executed accurately
since if one piece has a different starting mass or surface area, this could seriously impair the results.
We used the same amounts of solution per test tube (6cm). Empty reply does not make any sense for

human error, it could be that this one was left on the side longer or maybe the solution was
contaminated by a slightly stronger one. This is because the potato chip is becoming as flaccid as it
