Required Textbooks : Principles of Physics (9th Ed.). Author(s): Halliday, Resnick and Walker (available
in the library).
You can also use Physics for Scientists and Engineers : A Strategic Approach
with Modern Physics (3rd Ed.). Author(s): Randall D Knight (available in the
library).
Course description : This is the second course on Physics. In this course, the concepts of fields, namely
the electric and magnetics fields, will be introduced for a given charge and current
distributions respectively. The fields will be calculated for various source distributions,
and using these the electric and magnetic force will be calculated. In particular we will
study the Gauss’s and Ampere’s laws. The concepts of electric potential, electrostatic
and magnetic forces will introduced and computed. These ideas will be used to solve
various electric circuits. Finally these two fields will be incorporated into a single
frame of mathematical equations known as the Maxwell equations.
Course Objectives : The objective is to develop the following skills
– compute the electric fields, forces, potentials and energies for various charge
distributions.
– compute the magnetic fields, forces, and energies for various current distribu-
tions.
– solve simple and basic electric circuits, RC, LC and RL circuits using Ohm’s
law, Kirchhoff’s junction and loop rules, Lenz’s law and Faraday’s law.
– understand the foundation of Maxwell equations.
Grade Distribution : The final grade is based on the attendance, quiz, two midterms and the mandatory
final exam contributing 5%, 10%, 50% and 35% respectively. Minimum 20 class
attendances are required to get full marks. Note that missing the final exam
will earn you an automatic failing grade. There will be six quizzes and the best
four will be considered to finalize your final grade.
