Period Calculation by Method B Example-05 (Natural Period/Fundamental Period) A three story, steel moment resisting frame with the properties shown in figure, height of 36 feet and with a damping ratio of five percent is located on a site in zone 3 with a soil profile type SD. Calculate the period of vibration by using UBC method A and method B?

Center of Mass (COM)
The Center of Mass in a floor is the point where
the whole mass of the floor is acting including the superimposed dead loads. It is also known as a center of application of lateral forces.
Organized by Dr.Aslam Faqeer Mohammad 125
Center of Stiffness/ COR
Story lateral stiffness center or Center of
Stiffness or Center of Rigidity (COR) corresponds to the point where the floor diaphragm will tend to rotate about a vertical axis when the structure subjected to the lateral forces.

Center of Stiffness/ COR
The location of the story lateral stiffness center
in plan should be calculated using the lateral stiffness of the walls only, disregarding the stiffness contribution of the columns of the structure.
Organized by Dr.Aslam Faqeer Mohammad 128
Center of Stiffness/ COR Lateral stiffness Kx and Ky of structural walls should be computed using the following equations both in principal directions x and y. For walls with length lw parallel to the x-axis, Kx = bw3 lw / hpi and Ky = lw3 bw / hpi
bw = width of wall, lw = length of wall and hpi = height of wall.
For walls with length lw parallel to the y-axis, Kx = lw3 bw / hpi and Ky = bw3 lw / hpi
