Speaking – Using a phone (Target B2)

1. Introduce yourself when calling by saying ‘This is Xxxx speaking’
2. Choose a discrete ring tone if using a mobile phone.
3. Leave your mobile phone on in a meeting, class, theatre…
4. Warn callers you are on a mobile phone and might get cut off.
5. Shout so that people will hear you.
6. Forget to charge your battery regularly.
7. Be polite over the phone.
8. Talk about personal things in a loud voice on your mobile phone so everyone can hear.
9. Choose to send a text message rather than a phone call after 10 pm.

2) Match the two columns to find the best equivalents.

1. Hang up the phone a. She can’t speak to you now.

2. Am I disturbing you? b. I can’t contact her.
3. She can’t come to the phone now c. Is it convenient to speak now?
4. The line is busy. d. Stay on the line.
5. I’ll phone her. e. I’ll call her.
6. Don’t hang up. f. Put the receiver down.

3) To complete this phone conversation, adapt expressions from the ‘Useful expressions’ box.
A: …?
B: I’m sorry, Serena’s out.
A:. …. leave a message?
B: Of course you can. What would you like to tell her?
A: Tell her….
When will she be back?
B: In two hours.

4) Action!
Learn new words and expressions (don’t forget to practise pronunciation + stress – ask the teacher if you are not
sure), then work in pairs: practise a telephone conversation.
Work in pairs. You call your friend to invite him/her to a party. He/She is out and you have to speak to his/her
mother.

5) Role plays
Work in pairs. Study the expressions from the ‘A few tips’ box, and act out the following telephone conversations.
a) Make a reservation at a youth hostel (auberge de jeunesse)
b) Plan a tennis game with a friend
c) Cancel an invitation to a BBQ
