neutralize 20.0mL of a 0.245 M H2SO4?
H2SO4 + 2NaOH Na2SO4 + 2H2O
MA = 0.245 M MB = 0.610 M
VA = 20.0 mL Vb = ?

MAVA = 1
MBVB 2
(0.245)(20) = 1
(0.610) VB 2
VB = 16.066 mL
(4 points)

3. A 25.00 mL solution of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is required to titrate with 42.25

mL of 0.015 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

i. What is the balanced equation for the reaction.

H2SO4 + 2NaOH Na2SO4 + 2H2O

(1 point)

ii. Calculate the molarity of H2SO4 used.

H2SO4 + 2NaOH Na2SO4 + 2H2O

MA = ? MB = 0.015 M
VA = 25.00 mL Vb = 42.25 mL

MAVA = 1
MBVB 2
(MA)(25) = 1
(0.015)(42.25) 2
VB = 0.013 M
(4 points)
iii. Determine the pH of NaOH before the neutralisation was performed.

pOH = - log [OH-]

= - log [0.015]
= 1.8

pH = 14 – 1.8
= 12.2
(3 points)

4. A sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution has a concentration of 0.001 M, with 10.5%

dissociation. Determine the pH of this solution.

pOH = - log [OH-]

= - log [0.001]
= 13

pH = 14 – 3
= 11
(3 points)

5. Calculate the molar concentration of H+ if the solution has the pH value of 2.40.
pH = - log [H+]
2.40 = - log [H+]
[H+] = 3.98 x 10-3 M @ 0.004 M
(2 points)

6. In a titration experiment, 12.5 mL of 0.5 M H2SO4 neutralize 50.0 mL of NaOH.

i. Write a balanced equation for this reaction.

H2SO4 + 2NaOH Na2SO4 + 2H2O
ii. Determine the molarity of NaOH.
(4 points)
H2SO4 + 2NaOH Na2SO4 + 2H2O
MA = 0.5 M MB = ?
VA = 12.5 mL Vb = 50.0 mL

MAVA = 1
MBVB 2
(0.5)(12.5) = 1
(MB)(50.0) 2 MB = 0.25 M
7. Determine the pH and pOH value of the following solution:
i. 0.00125 M HCl.
pH = - log [H+]
= - log (0.00125)
= 2.9

pOH = 14 – 2.9
= 11.1
(2 points)

8. A 30.00 mL solution of nitric acid (HNO3) is required to titrate with 45.00 mL of

0.015 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

i. Calculate the molarity of HNO3 used.

HNO3 + NaOH NaNO3 + H2O

MA = ? MB = 0.015 M
VA = 30.0 mL Vb = 45.0 mL

MAVA = 1
MBVB 1
(MA)(30.0) = 1
(0.015)(45.0) 1
MB = 0.023 M
