SOP On Manual Cleaning of Instrument in CSSD
1. PURPOSE:
1.1. To carry out manual cleaning of used items that have to be processed in the CSSD.
2. SCOPE:
2.1. All CSSD personnel
3. RESPONSIBILITY:
3.1. CSSD In-Charge and the CSSD technician designated to Washing Area.
4. ABBRIVATION:
4.1. CSSD – Central Sterile Supply Department
5. PROCEDURE:
5.1. Some instruments with lumens, needles, syringes, basins, trays, other precision items or areas of
instruments such as grooves/teeth require manual cleaning.
5.2. When instruments are returned, rinse immediately and thoroughly under running cold tap water.
5.3. Manual wash in enzymatic solution using a stiff hand brush. Give particular attention to serrations,
hinges, locks, grooves and teeth.
5.4. Avoid using harsh abrasives and cleansing agents, to keep from damaging the steel or plating.
5.5. Inspect each instrument after cleaning.
5.6. Manipulate box locks and hinges until they work freely, then dry the instruments in a drier or wipe them
as dry as possible with a clean cloth before sterilizing.
5.7. Avoid aerosols while rinsing and clean up immediately in case of any spillages.
5.8. Sharp instruments shall be handled gently and washed separately if they are numerous.
5.9. Intercostal Drainage bottles are soaked or filled with disinfectant solution and kept for 30 minutes. They
may then be manually cleaned with an appropriate brush and thoroughly rinsed.
