Details
Skill level: Beginner

The beanie is worked as a flat rectangular shape, folded and sewn together. It's optional if you would like to
style it with a yarn pom pom or faux fur pom pom.

Sizing
The pattern includes 6 sizes. The height of the beanie includes the brim to fold up which means it can be
adjusted depending on personal preference. The sizing provided below is based on using Stylecraft Special Aran
10ply. If you are using other yarns you can still refer to the sizing table to achieve the same measurements.

Notes

1.0 - The height includes enough length to fold up 2.5-3 inches and create a brim. Your number of chains
should equal the measurement provided. If it doesn't, please add or remove extra chains to achieve the
height.

1.1 - The pattern consists of making a grouping of (3 hdc blo rows with sl st(s) blo in last 5 st and 1 sl st blo
row). To achieve the size simply follow how many slip stitch groups to make. If you are using a different
weight yarn and the number of slip stitch groups doesn't give you the desired width, simply add or remove
slip stitch group(s). This will ensure the width is met accordingly to the specified measurements. Image 3 on
the next page will show how to identify how many slip stitch groups you have completed. It may also help to
write down how many you have done to keep track.

1.2 - This measurement is how wide your beanie must stretch for the size you are making. The sizing is based
on the average head circumference for that age bracket. For example: if you are making the 1yr up to 3yrs
old sizing, the beanie will fit more generously on the 1yr old but will fit snuggly on the 3yr old.

Look for this video icon in some of the images as there will be a video tutorial to guide you along the way.

Let's start!

Chain the number of stitches based on the size you are making or the number required to reach the
recommended height. Refer to sizing table on page 2.

Row 1: Work hdc into the second chain from the hook, and every ch until you reach the last 5 ch(s),
work a sl st into each ch, ch 1 and turn. The total number of stitches should be 1 less than what you
chained eg: chained 38, total stitches at the end of the row will be 37.

Row 2: Work a sl st in blo into each of the 5 st(s), work hdc in blo for the remaining st(s), pull tight once
you have put in the last hdc in blo, ch 1 and turn. (See image 1 to ensure you are placing the last hdc
into the correct blo st).

Row 3: Work hdc in blo into every st until you reach the last 5 st(s), work 5 sl st in blo, ch 1 and turn.
You may like to use a stitch marker at the start of the row once you have made a hdc in blo to identify
the blo ch (as shown in the video in image 1).

Row 4: Work sl st in blo into every st, pull tight once you have put in the last sl st in blo, ch 1 and turn.
(Once row 4 has been completed you have completed a slip stitch group. See image 3)

Row 5: Repeat row 3. (See image 2 to ensure you are placing the hdc into the correct blo st).

Row 6: Repeat row 2

Row 7: Repeat row 3

Row 8: Repeat row 4

Row 9 onwards, you will be repeating the pattern of rows 5-8 which will be called Slip Stitch Group,
see image 3 for the illustrations). When you have made the number of correct slip stitch group to
finish, you must end on row 4.

How many slip stitch groups to make to achieve the correct width of beanie:

Firstly, refer to the sizing table and make the number of slip stitch groups based on the size you are
making. Secondly, complete the stretch test (see image 4 on the next page).

Stretch Test

To complete a stretch test, make sure to fold a 2.5-3in brim before you stretch the beanie. Example in the
image is a size 0-6m beanie that is required to stretch to 17in/43cm in width.

Image 4

Fold and join the beanie on the side:

You will always finish on a sl st row from row 4 and end up at the bottom of the beanie. Fold the
beanie in half making sure the correct side with slip stitch groups are on the inside (see images
5 & 6).

and sew the sides together

Image 6

You will now join it together, sl st the side closest to you (the side the starting ch(s) are on) with
the blo of the sl st row the yarn is on. Go along and sl st as it should match up until you get to
the end. When you sl st the last st, cut a tail around 30cm.

Close the top of the beanie:

Use a sewing needle, thread back and forth the top stitch of the beanie (see image 7). Pull the
top of the beanie to close it (see image 8). Sew in the ends. Turn the beanie inside out and fold
the brim up to approximately 2.5-3in (see image 9). To finish it off, you can leave it as it is or add
any type of pom pom.
