ACTIVITY 5
Essay
Create 2 ESSAYS on the ff. questions below:
1. What is the significance of RA 8749 in managing the environment relating to mining
activities? What are the provisions of the law which addresses the issues of the mining
sector with regards to air pollution produced by mining activities?

The Republic Act no. 8749, often known as the Philippine Clean Air Act, was recently
passed into law. The significance of this act in relation to the management of the environment in
relation to mining activities is that it provides a comprehensive air pollution control policy, that it
aims to prevent and minimize air pollution produced by mining activities, and that it protects the
environment in a way that aims to achieve and maintain healthy air for all people. These are the
goals of the act.
However, clean air has become contaminated as a result of a number of factors,
including mining activities and the heavy equipment that is used in the mining industry. This
heavy machinery produces fumes or smoke that is harmful to inhale, in addition to producing a
thick dust that may be breathed in. In addition, exposure to pollution in the air can lower the
body's natural defenses against a variety of viruses and bacteria. It has a range of negative
effects on one's health, from making them lethargic to increasing their risk of contracting fatal
diseases like lung cancer. In point of fact, this problem requires the government to enact
legislation in order to provide the people of the Philippines with clean air to breathe and lean on.

2. What is the significance of RA 6969 in managing the environment relating to mining

activities? What are the provisions of the law the which addresses the issues of the
mining sector with regards to handling hazardous and toxic substances?
An Act to Control Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes, Providing
Penalties for Violations Thereof, and for other Purposes is the central focus of Republic Act No.
6969 (Republic Act No. 6969). This is crucial because we want to know how to oversee,
supervise, and regulate operations involving hazardous waste and harmful substances. This
information will help us accomplish so. The regulation, restriction, or prohibition of the
importation, manufacture, processing, sale, distribution, use, and disposal of chemical
substances and mixtures that present an unreasonable risk and/or injury to health or the
environment is also the purpose of Republic Act (RA) 6969, as is the prohibition of the entry,
even in transit, of hazardous and nuclear materials. Also, the purpose of RA 6969 is to prevent
the entry of nuclear materials.
And it provides for the regulation of all chemical substances that may pose a threat to
public health and the environment through import, manufacture, sale, use, distribution, and
disposal, as well as the regulation of all hazardous wastes from generation, transport, storage,
re-use/recycling, treatment, and disposal. Additionally, it regulates the disposal of all chemical
wastes. In addition, those who violate the law will be liable to monetary fines, jail time, loss of
employment, the seizure and forfeiture of any chemical substances or combinations in favor of
the government, as well as expulsion from the Philippines and a prohibition on reentering the
country if they are a foreign national.
