Introduction
Welcome to another topic in Music 10, “Contemporary Philippine Music,” where
you will be able to describe, distinguish, and appreciate modern Philippine music brought
to us by composers like Antonio Molina, Alfredo Buenaventura, Lucrecia Kasilag, Ramon
Santos, and Ryan Cayabyab.
In this module, you will also explore the different traditional Philippine music as
well as the musical instruments used to accompany the vocal and instrumental music of
the different regions and time periods in the Philippine musical history. At the end of the
module, you will be able to find new meaning to Contemporary Philippine Music. Read
on, explore, and find new perspectives with Music 10.

At the end of the quarter, the learner is expected to:

• analyze the musical characteristics of traditional and contemporary Philippine music;
• improvise simple vocal/instrumental accompaniments to selected contemporary
Philippine music;
• performs selections of contemporary Philippine music; and
• evaluates music and music performances using guided rubrics.

expression; and
5. value the emotions and ideas being captured by traditional and contemporary
Philippine music.

Lesson Discussion
Traditional Filipino Music
Like other traditional music in other countries, Filipino traditional music reflects the
way of life, beliefs, and traditions of the rural folks. This type of music usually glorifies the
beauty of nature and man’s strong connection with his environment.

Characteristics of Traditional Filipino Music


1. Ethnic
a. The Muslim’s kulintang is an ensemble composed of a set of eight gongs of
graduated sizes arranged in a row. The kulintang includes gandingan (a set of
suspended gongs), agong (a tubular gong), and a babendil (a small gong).
b. The gangsa ensemble is played according to the traditions of the different
tribes (Kalinga, Ifugao, Bontoc) of the Cordillera. It is a smooth-surfaced gong
with a narrow rim.
2. Hispanic
a. Rondalla ensemble came from Spain but became more popular in the
Philippines during the 19th century. This ensemble consists of the banduria,
laud, octavina, guitar, and bajo de uñas.
b. Sarsuwela is a combination of melodrama. Songs and dances. Same with
rondalla, sarsuwela was also introduced by the Spaniards. The rondalla serves
as the accompaniment of the sarsuwela.
3. Filipino
a. Kundiman is an art song about the love of a man for a woman. It is usually
written in ¾ time signature and usually in minor key and then shifts to the
major key.
b. Balitao is a Visayan folk song where a man and a woman engage in a debate
by means of a song.
c. Bamboo music or Musikong Bumbong is a band that uses improvised
instruments made of bamboo. The bamboo band includes piccolo, tuba,
clarinets, flutes, and saxophones made of bamboo.

Contemporary Music
Contemporary music, also known as “Modern music” or “New Music,” pertains to
compositions that have adopted elements of 20th-century Western music as well as the
latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry and in the musical world.
