SE - Lect 02-04 - Beams

This document describes a structural engineering course covering the stiffness matrix method of structural analysis. The 3-credit course is taught by Muhammad Haroon and covers fundamentals of the stiffness method, including: (1) using the stiffness method to analyze determinate and indeterminate structures; (2) formulating the necessary matrices for computer analysis; and (3) applying the stiffness method to analyze beams by deriving the beam member stiffness matrix. The procedure involves identifying members and nodes, then assembling the global stiffness matrix to solve for displacements and forces.

MATRIX METHOD
OF ANALYSIS
(STIFFNESS
MATRIX
METHOD)
FUNDAMENTALS OF STIFFNESS
METHOD

 There are essentially two ways in which structures

can be analyzed using matrix methods.
 The stiffness method, is a displacement method of
analysis.
 A force method, called the flexibility method, can
also be used
 However, this method you have already studied
earlier in Structural Analysis course.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STIFFNESS METHOD
 The stiffness method can be used to analyze both statically
determinate and indeterminate structures
 Whereas the flexibility method requires a different procedure
for each of these two cases.
 Also, the stiffness method yields the displacements and
forces directly, whereas with the flexibility method the
displacements are not obtained directly. Furthermore, it is
generally much easier to formulate the necessary matrices for
the computer operations using the stiffness method; and once
this is done, the computer calculations can be performed
efficiently.
BEAM ANALYSIS
USING
STIFFNESS METHOD
PROCEDURE:
MEMBER AND NODE IDENTIFICATION
 The beam is first subdivided in finite elements, the nodes of
each element are located at a support or at points where
members are connected together.
 Consider a beam illustrated in the figure, four nodes are are
specified numerically within a circle, and the three elements
are specified numerically within a square. Near and Far ends
are identified by the arrows.
BEAM MEMBER STIFFNESS MATRIX
 Now for the unit deflection, when Δ=1

 Now find out all the other unknowns using this form and
determine all displacement and moment values.
MEMBER STIFFNESS MATRIX
 The resulting four load-displacement relations for the
member can be expressed in matrix form as:
