ABSTRACT

When an infected individual coughs, sneezes, or talks, COVID-19 is

transmitted by respiratory droplets. By touching a contaminated surface and then

touching their eyes, mouth, or nose, people may become infected. Handwashing

aids in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Soap and water can save lives. Every

day, by washing their hands properly, people can prevent the spread of diseases

and infections. This study went through a number of steps in order to produce a

stunning result. Science and technology were also very useful in creating this

study because they served as a guide to execute the tasks correctly.

To gather the needed data, different references were used such as books,

magazines and the internet. The research was a success, and it benefits everybody.

According to the results, our project is extremely beneficial, especially during a

pandemic. Furthermore, in order to limit the spread of the virus, we must adhere

to COVID-19 protocols. The study's findings are extremely helpful, demonstrating

that there is a way to prevent the virus from spreading. Droplet transmission is

regulated by social distance and the use of cloth face masks, surgical masks,

respirators, or other face coverings. Transmission can be reduced indoors by

maintaining well-maintained heating and ventilation systems in order to ensure

good air circulation and maximize the use of outdoor air.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

In 1846, a physician named Ignaz Semmelweis worked in the maternity

clinic at the general hospital in vienna. Dr. Semmelweis wanted to figure out why there

were so many deaths from palpebral fever in women in the hospital maternity wards

commonly known as child bed fever. It was proposed that disinfection of hands could

stop the transfer of disease from cadavers to pregnant women. However, mortality rates

of women delivered by medical students fell to the same level as those of women

delivered by the midwife trainees, it was therefore necessary for all medical students to

wash their hands in chlorinated lime after autopsies and before examining patients.

Hand hygiene involves any action of hand cleansing, rubbing your hands

with an alcohol made hand rub or washing your hands with soap and water to avoid the

growth of microorganisms on hands. Normal hand washing with soap and water is the

best component of a hand hygiene program to reduce the risk of contracting infection

through contact with hands, however, there is difficulty of maintaining compliance to

basic hand washing practices and this are difficulties to conquer, especially being in a

school environment. Practice of hand hygiene can be difficult to perform due to factors
6
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
such as time constraints and the lack of wash bowl in most classroom environments. In

these cases, instead of the normal hand hygiene practice of hand washing with soap and

water the use of a waterless alcohol gel and hand sanitizers such as alcohol gels, offer

fast, simple, and effective hand hygiene. Hammond et al. showed in a research that

elementary school absenteeism due to illness was greatly reduced when the students

were told to practice good hand hygiene by using an alcohol gel hand sanitizer. In

another study, Fendler et al. showed that alcohol gel hand sanitizers also reduced the

rate at which infection transfers in an extended care facility where there is close

proximity and direct contact between living and working in a particular place and care

givers which can lead to the transfer of microbes unintentionally from one person to

another.

There are some microorganisms not found consistently on the skin of most

humans. These microorganisms are considered to be "transient flora" which is located

on the superior layer of the skin and can be contracted during direct contact with

clients, patients, residents, health care providers and in the environment. Transient

bacteria may also be easily passed on to others or to objects in the environment and are

a frequent cause of health associated infections (e.g. gramnegative bacteria, Escherichia

coli). Such flora can be removed by mechanical friction of soap and water washing or

eliminated by applying an antiseptic hand rub.

Another type of flora present is the resident flora these can be found in the

deep region of the skin and are considered permanent residents of the skin. These
7
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
bacteria do not generally harm and are health care associated infections that can be

beneficial to the good health of the skin on most people and are not easily removed by

mechanical friction. Washing of hands with water and soap removes the transient flora,

but does not kill most of the resident flora on hands. Hand washing has been a generally

accepted practice to reduce contact transmission of microorganisms.

The spread of germs between humans can occur directly through hands, or

indirectly through an environmental source by having contact with them (e.g. clinical

equipment, opening of doors, toys etc.). It is a general fact that the hands are the major

route by which spread of dangerous microorganisms can occur for example, between

people, by touching pieces of equipment, etc. These can cause infections and the

practice of hand hygiene is the most important factor in the prevention of infection.

However, research on standard hand hygiene practice among health care workers have

repeatedly shown poor adherence with hand hygiene.

Washing of hands is of great significance means of preventing germs from

spreading according to centers for disease control and prevention (CDC). CDC also

recommends washing hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds.

According to the World Health Organization, it has been estimated that washing

hands with soap and water could reduce deaths caused by diarrhea by up to 50%. Also,

researchers in London estimated that if everyone washes their hands as a normal

routine, a million deaths a year could be prevented. A large percentage of outbreaks of

8
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
disease caused by infected food are caused by contaminated hands. Proper hand

washing practices can reduce the risk of having infected which can lead to illness and

other infections. Hand washing can prevent the risk of respiratory infections by 16%.

The centers for disease control and prevention and the association for

professionals in infection control and epidemiology in the United State has clearly

identified that successful hand washing practice is the most significant method of

preventing the spread of diseases. Teaching appropriate hand hygiene practices can

promote healthy balance and have many benefits in a vast variety of places such as

learning institutions, which include day cares, primary, secondary schools and

universities.

Statement of the Problem

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

Materials and Methods

Preparation for the materials needed

Covid-19, as we all know, is easily spread if we don't know how to

properly wash our hands. The researchers decided as a group to make a hand sanitizer

machine to help prevent the spread of COVID- 19. DC motors, a speed controller DC

motor, a 9v battery, plastic spray bottles, cardboard/plywood, LED lights, an ice cream

stick, a BBQ bamboo stick, a rubber band, and a Coca-Cola can are all required

materials.
15
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

Procedures for making the hand sanitizer machine

The researchers were assigned to bring the required materials. The hand

sanitizer's body or cover were made of cardboard. The sizes of cardboard/plywood are

4cm x 13 cm, 13 cm x 9 cm, 25 cm x 15 cm, 25 cm x 25 cm, and 49 cm x 9 cm. Because

it converts direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy, the DC motors are

responsible for the machine's operation. The researchers’ invention also requires 9 volts

because it stores chemical energy before converting it to electrical energy. The

researchers also designed the machine to be neat, long-lasting, and useful. It is a

significant invention because it benefits a large number of people during this pandemic.

Experimental Set-Up

This project started on March 31, 2021, which is a perfect day for the

researchers to begin. They brought the materials they needed and stick to the procedures

they’ve decided on. They performed it safely through the help of their teachers and

parents. Each of them has been given a task to complete, and we are all capable of

completing it.
16

CHAPTER 3

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND

INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Machines are transforming the world into a healthier and safer place. If you

search for risky things such as entering a collapsed mining cave or inserting sensitive

explosives. Humans may be replaced by machines. To explore the caves, a small

17
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
camera attached to the rig with a controller can be sent in. Even areas with extremely

high temperatures that humans are unable to handle. The same is true if the weather

is cold. Machines are the dominant force propelling the world forward in terms of

growth. If you look at today's small tasks, they were once big items, and there is a

need for more computers that make human work easier. Similarly, today's major

stuff will be replaced by tomorrow's minor events. It only takes progress – one step

at a time – to increase performance, protection, and accuracy in the world we live in.

The researchers' invention was successful thanks to the use of DC motors

as one of the materials used. The researchers created a hand sanitizer machine in the

hopes of saving lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. A DC motor is an electric

machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy. DC motors

transform electrical energy into mechanical rotation by using direct current.

The term ‘DC motor’ is used to refer to any rotary electrical machine that converts

direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy. DC motors can vary in size

and power from small motors in toys and appliances to large mechanisms that power
18
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
vehicles, pull elevators and hoists, and drive steel rolling mills. But how do DC

motors work?

DC motors include two key components: a stator and an armature. The

stator is the stationary part of a motor, while the armature rotates. In a DC motor, the

stator provides a rotating magnetic field that drives the armature to rotate.

A simple DC motor uses a stationary set of magnets in the stator, and a

coil of wire with a current running through it to generate an electromagnetic field

aligned with the center of the coil. One or more windings of insulated wire are

wrapped around the core of the motor to concentrate the magnetic field.

The windings of insulated wire are connected to a commutator (a rotary

electrical switch), that applies an electrical current to the windings. The commutator

allows each armature coil to be energised in turn, creating a steady rotating force

(known as torque).
19
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
When the coils are turned on and off in sequence, a rotating magnetic field

is created that interacts with the differing fields of the stationary magnets in the

stator to create torque, which causes it to rotate. These key operating principles of

DC motors allow them to convert the electrical energy from direct current into

mechanical energy through the rotating movement, which can then be used for the

propulsion of objects.

CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant loss of human life

around the world, and it poses an unprecedented threat to public health, food

systems, and the workplace. The pandemic's economic and social effects are

devastating: tens of millions of people are at risk of falling into extreme poverty, and

the number of people who are undernourished, which is currently projected to be

about 690 million, could rise to 132 million by the end of the year.

Handwashing is needed after coughing or sneezing, while caring for the sick,

after using the toilet, before eating, when preparing food, and after handling animals

or animal waste to prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as other COVID

acceptable behaviors.
20
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
To stop the virus from spreading, the researchers decided to create a hand

sanitizer machine. Their innovation is extremely useful in this period of pandemic

because it sanitizes the hands without touching anything. Touching a contaminated

surface and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth before washing your hands is

thought to be a way to become infected.

Conclusion

COVID-19 virus spreads mainly by droplets produced when an infected

individual coughs, sneezes, or talks. Infection may also be contracted by rubbing a

contaminated substance and then covering your eyes, nose, or mouth before washing

your hands.

To address this problem, the researchers invented hand sanitizer machine as

an essential invention in this time of pandemic. With this invention, we can prevent

the spread of the virus because of its good qualities. Being an inventor necessitates

invention and innovation. Inventions are made for a number of purposes. Any people

innovate to fulfill simple human needs. Others invent to meet their own artistic

needs. Many inventions are motivated by social or economic factors, such as a desire

to make life simpler and more convenient or a desire to benefit. Inventions play a role
21
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
in our everyday lives by supplying us with the necessities for a comfortable and

healthy lifestyle, or by saving us time and effort as we go through our daily activities.

Researching will assist you in developing a mindset of not trusting anything

you see and hear, but more clarifying and further investigating a particular response. It

challenges and sharpens our minds and brains - analysis will challenge and sharpen

one's mind.

Recommendation

Based on the findings and conclusions presented, the following

recommendations are suggested:

1. The researchers recommend that every grocery stores, malls, or any

establishments to make homemade hand sanitizer machine in order to lessen

the possibility of the spread of the virus.

2. The researchers recommend that social distancing should be practiced in

combination with other everyday preventive actions to reduce the spread of

COVID-19, including wearing masks, avoiding touching your face with

unwashed hands, and frequently washing your hands with soap and water

for at least 20 seconds.

22
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED
3. The researchers recommend that every individual should always bring their

own alcohol or hand sanitizers so that they wouldn’t need to wash their

hands every now and then. It doesn’t only give convenience but also gives

better protection because of their ability to wash away germs which makes it

advisable to carry around. This will aid in stopping viruses from lingering in

our bodies for an extended period of time.

DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

To make our project possible, we brought the materials needed. We made

sure that all materials are complete for us to perform the tasks easier. All of us

contributed for these materials so that we could afford to buy them. The materials

are the three DC motors, LED lights, one speed controller DC motor, and wires.

Preparation allows you to find the most effective way to do stuff. When you've

decided that a project is worthwhile, the next move is to figure out how to do it in

the most effective way possible. Many that have not prepared will use the first

approach that comes to mind or one that they are familiar with.
28
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

Aside from the other materials that we bought together, there are also materials

that is needed for our invention or experiment. We decided to bring materials that is

necessary for our project. These materials are the ice-cream sticks, barbecue sticks,

shoes glue, glue stick, scissor, cans, ruler, and cardboards. It is important that we have

a good teamwork because it makes the task easier.

29
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

We helped each other in doing the project. We followed the right procedures

and steps so that it will be easier for us to finish our tasks. Collaboration within a

group can help solve difficult problems. Brainstorming is a good opportunity for the

team to exchange ideas and come up with creative ways of doing things. By working

together, teams can find the solutions that work best.

30
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

We had no idea how to link the wires correctly at first, but Angelo Dingle

offered to do it. He instructed us to focus on our assigned tasks so that we could

complete our project on time. It was an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate

our abilities and skills.

31
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

And after we finished the invention, the first thing we did as a group was

organize the data from our study. We discussed the significant events that occurred

during the study. The most significant aspect of analytical thinking is gathering

knowledge. Obtaining all of the details required to make an informed decision would

always result in the best outcome.
