COURSE INFORMATION
1. Course Number : GE 3
2. Course Name : The Contemporary World
3. Course Description : This course introduces students to the contemporary world by examining the
multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of social sciences, it examines
the economic, social, political, technological and other transformation that have created an increasing
awareness of the disconnectedness of peoples and places around the globe. To this end, the course
provides an overview of the various debates in global governance, development and sustainability.
Beyond exposing the student to the world outside the Philippines, it seeks to inculcate a sense of global
citizenship and global ethical responsibility.

understand the concepts of global economy, market integration, global
interstate system and contemporary global governance.
Second Unit 2 Multiple You are expected to analyze global issues in relation to Filipinos and the
Exam Choice Philippines in the contemporary setting; and demonstrate profound
Questions knowledge on the world of regions encompassing the North and the
South. You are to understand the functions and purpose of
International Organizations, specifically the United Nations. You are also
to analyze the different ideas on global media cultures and the
globalization of religion, and its effect to the global community.
Third Exam Unit 3 Multiple You are expected to identify global concerns in the contemporary
Choice setting and demonstrate profound knowledge on global issues and
Questions concerns such as the global population, global citizenship, global
migration and environmental crisis and development.
Final Exam All topics Multiple You are expected to write a research paper on a topic related to the
discussed Choice issues in globalization and integrate the different topics on
globalization. You are then expected to present this paper together with
their realizations on their concern topics and its relevance to the
contemporary world.
