Analyzing Distance of Flight Routes

Part 1

Case 1: An airplane flies from Beijing, China (approximately 120°E, 40° N) to Xinjiang,
China (approximately 90° E, 40°N).

a) Convert the two coordinates given in degrees to xy-coordinates.

(______, ______) (______, ______)

b) Construct your flight route with the two xy-coordinates on the graph.

c) What does your flight route look like? Circle your answer.

Horizontal Line Vertical Line Slanted Line

d) By looking at the line segment you created on the graph, how can you find the distance
traveled?

e) What pattern did you find by comparing the x and y coordinates in part (a) and the
distance traveled? When comparing the two coordinates, what values changed and
represents the distance you found?

f) Do you think it is reasonable to express distance as coordinate points? Do you think a

distance should always be positive? Why or why not?
Case 2: An airplane will fly from Seoul, South Korea (approximately 130° E, 40° N) to
Muan-gun, South Korea (approximately 130°E, 30° N).

a) Convert the two coordinates given in degrees to coordinates on a xy-graph.

(______, ______) (______, ______)

b) Construct your flight route with the two xy-coordinates on the graph.

c) What does your flight route look like? Circle your answer.

traveled?
e) What pattern did you find by comparing the x and y coordinates in part (a) and the
distance traveled? When comparing the two coordinates, what values changed and
represents the distance you found?

Case 3: An airplane flies from Pretoria, South African (30°E, 30°S) to Berlin, Germany
(approximately 10°E, 50°N).

a) Convert the two coordinates given in degrees to coordinates on a xy-graph.

(______, ______) (______, ______)

b) Construct your flight route with the two xy-coordinates on the geoboard. Draw your
flight route constructed on the geoboard on the grid below.

Part 2
1. Go to the graph for Case 3.

2. On the graph, draw a vertical line starting at one coordinate.

3. Then, create a horizontal line that touches one end of the vertical and the other
coordinate on the graph.

4. Use the formulas you derived in Cases 1 & 2 to find the distances of the vertical and
horizontal lines. What are the distances of the vertical and horizontal lines?

5. How will you use the distances of the vertical and horizontal line to find the distance
of the slanted line segment?

6. What kind of triangle forms from creating a vertical and horizontal line?

_____________________
7. How can we find the length/distance of the slanted line (Hint: What theorem can we
use to find it?)?

8. Find the length of the slanted line.
