- Consists mostly of Muslim or Moro people
- It is also composed of ethnic group
- Maranao, Tausug, Banguingi and Indigenous tribe known as Lumad

A. Vocal Music of Mindanao


-The islamic community in the Philippines consists mostly of
ethno-linguistic groups.
1. Chants
- A lyrical rendition of different improvised text
2. Lullaby
- A chant style or chant formula use in rocking a baby
to sleep.
Examples of I.P from Mindanao:
The Maguindanao from Cotabato
The Maranao of Lanao
The Samal and Jama Mapun of the Sulu
The Tausug of the Sulu islands; Jolo, Siasi, Tawi-tawi
The Yakan of Basilan and Zamboanga

Islamic Music
- May refer to religious music, as performed in Islamic public services or
private devotions, or more generally to musical traditions of the Muslim
world.

Characteristics of Islamic Music:


- Melisma Singing/ Melismatic (singing in a single syllable)
- Song phrases
- Narrow Singing
- Fluid singing
- Tremolo (quick repetition of words)
- Strained voice
- Nasal Enunciation

Vocal Music
- Is a type of singing performed by one or more singers, either with
instrumental accompaniment, or without instrumental accompaniment
(a capella), in which singing provides the main focus of the piece. Music
without any non-vocal instrumental accompaniment is referred to as a
capella.

Darangen- Epic song that encompasses a wealth of knowledge of

Music from Mindanao


1. Dikker- sacred songs highlighted by quotations from the Qur’an
- Maranaos have an extensive Vocal repertoire such as;
Dikker and Bayok
a. Ya-ya - is a song of the Yakans to put a baby to sleep, sung in a
relax/slow manner, soft and soothing while rocking the baby.
b. Bayok - is also a Maranao term for lullaby

NON-ISLAMIC
Migrants/Christians- The people who migrated from Luzon and Visayas were
mostly Christians.
Lumad- A collective term for groups of indigenous people from Mindanao
which means “Native”

Non-muslim Indigenous groups. The Lumads include:


Bagobo - Davao gulf and Davao region
Bilaan - Davao gulf
Kalagan - Davao gulf
Mandaya - Davao Region
Mansaka - Davao Region
Manobo - Bukidnon, Agusan Del Sur, Cotabato

Ulag Ing - Lament song of Manobo

Balatuking- Manobo harvest song Ritual song
Diwata- for curing ceremony of Subanon
Pamasag- for victory celebration of Manobo

Similarities do exist in some vocal


Styles within large society, but theoretical concepts, Functions, aesthetics and
repertoires differ From culture to culture, and even from village to village
belonging to one language group.

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MINDANAO


Mindanao
-referred to as “The land of promise”

-the second largest island located in the southernmost part of the Philippine
archipelago

-it produced a unique Filipino artistic tradition as a result of animism and


islamic religion fused together.

Lumad
-strongly influenced by the Malayo-Polynesian arts.

-the term “lumad” is Cebuano meaning “native” or “indigenous”

Bilaan or B’laan (Ethnic Group)


A. Traditional clothing of the B’laan
-the bilaan or b’laan is an ethnolinguistic group that inhabits some parts of
South Cotabato, North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

Bilaan or B’laan is a combination of two words:


Bila-house
An-people

They are known for their embroidery, brass ornaments and beadwork that are
integrated in their traditional clothing.

Takmun
-a sequence-like capiz shells used to give a distinct design and colour to their
clothes.
-b’laan woman’s shirt

Ikat
-the process of dyeing fabric from B’laan

Bagobos, and T’bolis where the yarns are tightly wrapped with string and dyed
before weaving.

B. Traditional clothing of the Bagobo and the T’boli
(They are group of people that live in Mindanao)
-“Bago” means new

–”obo” means growth

-t’boli or tagabili to lowlanders are an animist ethnic group inhabiting


highland areas in southwestern mindanao.

T’nalak
-is woven from deep down abaca treated in the ikat process to obtain
intricate design.

-men can’t wear t’nalak short, undershirt and t’nalak coat.

-women wear wrap-around t’nalak skirts and blouses. colours are red, brown
and black.

Manobo (Ethnic Group)


C. Traditional clothing of the Manobo
-the Manobos live in many provinces of Mindanao like Agusan del Sur,
Bukidnon, Davao regions, North and South Cotabato and Sarangani Islands.

-Manobo is the Hispanic form of “Manuvu”, which means “people.”

Mandaya (Ethnic Group)


D. Traditional clothing of the Mandaya
-another ethnic group in southeastern Mindanao, known for their colourful
and beautiful jewelries and clothing decorations.

-the Mandaya, Mandaya’s famous cotton fabric.

-the Mandaya are found throughout Davao Oriental and Davao del Norte,
Mindanao. Their name denotes the “first people upstream” and derived from
man “first” and daya “upstream or upper portion of a river.”

Maranao (Islamic Group)


E. Traditional clothing of the Maranao
-the word Maranao means “People of the Lake.” This is because many of them
reside along the great Lanao Lake.

Malong
-is a traditional Filipino tube skirt that is made of hand-woven or machine
made multicoloured cotton cloth. It is attractive because of its bright colours
and various designs like okir.

Kapa Malong or Sambisa Malong


-is a traditional dance which demonstrates the various ways of wearing
malong and its uses.
-most of their arts and crafts were patterned after okir.

-Other artworks “Sarimanok.”

Tiruray (Ethnic Group)


F. Traditional clothing of the Tiruray
-Tiruray is a combination of tiru (“place of origin, birth, or residence”) and ray
(from daya, meaning “upper part of a stream or river.”)

Islamic
-the Islamic of Mindanao traditions were first introduced to the Malays of the
Southern Philippines in the 14th century.

Maguindanao Islamic Group


G. Traditional clothing of Maguindanao
-also called “people of the flood plain.”

-they lived in a flooded-prone area of the Cotabato Province.

-they engage in agriculture and fishing.

-known for their skill in weaving fine mats and baskets.

Yakan (Islamic Group)


H. Traditional clothing of the Yakan
-Basilan is the home to the yakans.

-Badjulapi - is a tight blouse with long sleeves.

-Pinalantupan - a type of skirt that is layered over trousers.

-Sawal - is the traditional tight-fitting trousers made of Yakan fabric


characterized by its vertical stripes.

-Seputangan - square cloth used by Yakans women as a head cover or as a


belt.

Tausug (Islamic Group)


I. Traditional clothing of the Tausugs
-tausug is a combination of “tau” (person) and suug (the old name of Jojo
Island.)

-they are sometimes called “people of the current.” this is because many of
them live in near bodies of water.

-tausugs are the first tribe in the archipelago to be converted to Islam.

CRAFTS, ACCESSORIES, BODY ORNAMENTS and ARCHITECTURE


ARTS AND CRAFTS

Sarimanok
-it is a legendary bird of the Maranao. It comes from the word “sari” which
means cloth and “manok” which means chicken. A symbol of good fortune.

Okir
-it refers to traditional and unique carving. Its name originated from old
Malayan word which means carve or “ukit.”

-used as decorative elements in architecture.

ACCESSORIES

T'boli Accessories
a. Hilot - is a heavy brass belt worn by women during festivals.

b. Suwatlmimotis - is a wooden comb with coloured glass beads hanging


from it.

ARCHITECTURE

Torogan
-it is the ancestral house of the upper-class Maranao. It is the dwelling place
of the datu along with his wives and children

-the torogan can easily be distinguished because of its Panolong.

The Panolog
-is a carved ing-like ornament of a Torogan flaring out from the beams in the
front of the house and is adorned with okir motif.

Bajau House
-the bajau house, are the nomads of the sulu sea. Main source of livelihood is
fishing and hunting, thus, most of them live in boat houses or houses on stilts
around the sulu archipelago.

Grand Mosque of Cotabato


-the largest mosque in the Philippines, named after Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah.

Functional Art

Balanghai
-also known as balangay or butuan boat, is a large wooden boat used by the
pre-colonial filipinos for trade or migration.
Vinta
-muslim history and culture. These boats are colourful, small and not meant to
be used for long ocean travel. They are used for livelihood activities.
