PLAN VIEW OF LOCATION OF COFFER DAM

DESIGN OF COFFER DAM

1.0 GENERAL
A cofferdam is a temporary structure built to enclose an area for construction or repair
work below the water level. It creates a dry working environment, allowing construction
activities to take place in areas that would otherwise be submerged. The design of a
cofferdam is a crucial aspect of construction projects involving underwater or below-
water-level work. The following outlines key considerations in the design of a
cofferdam.

2.0 Data Provided by Client

Some of the basic data was provided by the client, which is given as below:

Data Data

Checklist Values

1 Flood Provided cumec 6.00 The given data seems like

However, the coffer dams
are generally design for I in

which it will be required

As mentioned above the coffer dam was designed as per the available data that was
provided by client.
3.0 Type of Cofferdam
There are various types of cofferdams, each suitable for specific conditions. Common
types include:

Concrete Coffer dam: Constructed either of Masonry/Concrete/Collodial Concrete.

Earthen Cofferdams: Constructed using locally available soil.

Rockfill Cofferdams: Built with a combination of rock and soil.

Sheet Pile Cofferdams: Consist of interlocking steel sheets driven into the ground.

Cellular Cofferdams: Comprise interconnected cells filled with soil or other materials.

The choice of type depends on factors such as soil conditions, water depth, and the
duration of use.

In our case we are going for the conventional Earthen Coffer Dams. The coffer dam
will be of the usual type of earthfill coffer dam with a central core of single sheet pile
upto the scour depth and the earthfill will be backed by sand bags on either side caged
suitably by G.I. wire mesh.

4.0 Design Parameter

As aforementioned the coffer dam was designed by using the given data and different
I.S. codes i.e., IS 9795, IS 10084 etc. Design calculations of the coffer dam are
attached as Annexure-1. A typical figure of the Coffer dam is given in Fig. 1. As the
drawing file of the planned coffer dam was not available, the rating curve was not
developed and the H.F.L. considered is 0.75m above the river bed level. Then the
freeboard of the structure was calculated using relevant IS codes.

5.0 Monitoring and Maintenance

Continuous monitoring of the cofferdam during construction is necessary to identify

and address any issues promptly. Post-construction maintenance may also be
required to ensure the long-term stability of the structure.
