End-of-year test answers


These answers have been written by the author. These may not fully reflect the

Part 1: Non-fiction
Reading
1 Information should be ticked. [1]
2 Water, water everywhere! [1]
3 Accept answers that refer to people not realising how much
water there is in the world. [1]
4 Award 2 marks if all answers are correct. Award 1 mark if three or four
answers are correct: [2]
water vapour – gas
constantly – endless

5 Award 1 mark for each correct explanation. [3]
a condensation: what happens when water vapour cools.
b transpiration: the loss of water from the leaves of plants and trees.
c evaporation: water rising into the atmosphere when it is warmed
by the sun.

7 Award 1 mark for each correct example of a fact. [2]
8 Award 1 mark for each correct example of an opinion. [2]
Possible answers: some people believe our planet is running out of
water; many people believe that the polar ice caps are melting faster
than ever before; people often watch the clouds and think they can see
faces and pictures in them.
9 Accept any two from: headings/subheadings; subject-specific words;
factual information. [1]

11 Present tense. Possible examples: is; know; can be; believe. [1]
12 Award 2 marks for any answer that refers to the order depending upon
where the water or precipitation falls. [2]
13 Award 1 mark for answers that refer to the water in the clouds falling
as rain, snow, sleet or hail. [1]
14 Condensation should be ticked. [1]
15 Award 1 mark each (up to a total of 2) for any of: transpiration;
condensation; precipitation; collection. [2]
16 Accept any two appropriate noun phrases. For example: solid ice;
global warming; water vapour; huge airborne water carriers. [1]
17 Award 2 marks for any reasonable answer based on the text. For example:
Without the sun, the water in the oceans and lakes would not warm up
and the water cycle would not be able to keep going. [2]

Reading
1 Adventure should be ticked. [1]
2 Onomatopoeia should be ticked. [1]
3 Award 1 mark for each correct example of each sentence type.
Possible answers include:
a Statement: He couldn’t quite believe his eyes.
b Exclamation: A dragon!
c Question: What is it? [3]
4 Award 1 mark for any appropriate adverb, e.g. quietly, shyly, slowly. [2]

Award 2 marks if the whole table is correct. Award 1 mark if three or four

7 Award up to 2 marks for any reasonable explanation (e.g. he knew
something was making a noise but he didn’t expect to find a dragon
in the cupboard). [2]

9 Accept any reasonable synonym for bold (e.g. brave, strong,
courageous, unafraid). [1]

12 Award 1 mark for any reasonable attempt at a calligram shape. [2]
13 Answers should refer to the fact the dragon must be small to fit inside
a cupboard. [2]
14 Award 1 mark for any preposition (e.g. from, in, of, at, with, down, on). [1]
15 Award 1 mark for any contraction that is expanded correctly (e.g. I’m – I am,
don’t – do not, we’ll – we will, everything’s – everything is, I’ve – I have). [1]
16 Award 1 mark for any reasonable prediction (e.g. help the dragon find
its way back to where it had come from; find someone to help the dragon). [1]
17 Award 1 mark for each correct explanation: tale – a type of story, tail – part
of an animal’s body. [2]
