CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHOD
This chapter describes the procedures the researcher used in carrying out the research work.
These include the design of the study, area of the study, population of the study, sample and
sampling techniques, instrument for data collection, validation of the instrument, reliability of
the instrument, method of data collection and method of data analysis.

Research Design
This study adopted descriptive survey design. It is a useful way of obtaining information about
people’s opinions, attitudes, preferences, and experiences simply by asking questions. This
design was used for this study since a group of people have to be studied systematically by
collecting and analyzing data from a chosen few considered sufficient representative of the entire
population.

Population of the Study

The population for this study consisted of all 25,000 undergraduate students of Ekiti state
University.

Sample and Sampling Techniques

The sample for the study consisted of 120 undergraduates science education students of Ekiti
state University. The sample was selected using multistage sampling procedure which involving
simple, purposive and stratified random sampling technique to ensure that every sample has an
equal chance of being selected in the study. In stage one, Ekiti state University was randomly
selected using simple random sampling technique. In stage two, Faculty of Education (science 40
education students) was randomly selected using purposive sampling technique. The reason for
using purposive random sampling technique was to ensure that science education students were
selected. In stage three, 200-400 level undergraduates science education students were selected
using simple random sampling technique putting into consideration 40 students from each level.
In stage four, male and female undergraduates science education students were selected using
stratified random sampling technique. Research Instrument
Questionnaire instrument developed by the researcher was used for the data collection.
Questionnaire items were constructed to afford answer to the research questions formulated to
guide the study. The questionnaire consisted two sections. Section one sought information on
personal data while the second section contains twenty (20) items structured to provide answers
to the major research questions. Four point Likert scale for measuring responding opinion level
of agreement/disagreement ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree which aid the
researcher to answer the research questions with values of 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively.

Validity of the Instrument

The instrument was validated by the expert of test and measurement, and researcher’s supervisor.
They made necessary corrections on the items and their input were incorporated in the final draft
of the instrument. The final copy of the instrument after the validation was used for data
collection.

Reliability of the Instrument

Test-retest method was employed in order to establish the reliability of the instrument. The
researcher administered the instrument on two different occasions to the same set of students in a
higher institution outside the sampled schools. Two different sets of responses were obtained and
correlated using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient(PPMCC). The coefficient
value of 0.87 was obtained which showed that the value is highly enough to make the instrument
reliable.

Administration of the Instrument

The instrument was administered personally by the researcher to the undergraduates science
education students in the Faculty of Education and explain all forms of ambiguity that may serve
as a problem to the respondents. The instruments were collected at the spot after their responses.

Data Analysis
The data collected for this study were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The
research questions were answered using frequency count, percentage, mean and standard
deviation. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were tested using t-test . All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05
level of significance.
