xps can also be acquired through observation of others, behaviour
Use skills and techniques to help the client

Client xp in therapy

Behaviour therapy provides the client with a clear role

It stresses the importane of client awareness and participation in therapeutic process which clients
must be motivated to change and willing to cooperate in carrying out therapeutic activities both
during therapy sessions and in their life. It is facilitated by well developed systems
Client are encouraged to xp in order to enlarge the scopes of adaptive behaviour as they unlearn self
defeating behaviours
Client is helped to generalize and to transfer the learning acquired within the therapeutic situation to
situations outside therapy. They need to be willing to make changes and continue implementing them
Client is given a frame of reference

Relationship between client and the therapist

A good therapeutic relationship increases the chances that the client will be receptive to therapy. Not
only that the client cooperate with therapeutic procedures, but the client’s positive epectations about
the effectiveness of the therapy often contribute to successful outcomes
The relationship acts as a foundation on which therapeutic strategies are built to help clients change
in the direction they wish
This relationship is characterized by the following which are sufficient but not adequate:
warmth,empathy,authenticity,permissiveness and acceptance
Unless clients respect their therapist, it will be difficult to develop the trust necessary for them to
engage in significant self-disclosure

Strengths of behaviourism
Based upon observable behaviour so it is easy to collect and quantify data and info when conducting
research
Effective therapeutic techniques such as intensive behavioural intervention, behaviour analysis token
economies and discrete trial training are all rooted in behaviorism
These approaches are often very useful in changing maladaptive or harmful behaviour in oth children
and adults
The succes of the approach is limiyed on the ability to control environment
It ignores other aspects of hman roblems such as meaning, search for values, identity issues but istead
focuses specifically on narrow behavioural problems

Behaviour perspective in ADA

ADA is learned
Is by product of an environment-assertivness should be taught
Is not the symptom of behaviour problem, but the behaviour problem

GESTALT THERAPY
Refers to being whole.
It cannot be understood simply as a sum of smaller, independent events
Theory of Personality
A person exists by differentiating self from other and by connecting self and other
Main originator is Fritz Perls and wife Laura Perls
It is an existential/phenomenological appraoch
Therapist try to increase clients awareness
Grounded in clients here and now

Key concepts
Phenomenological- I am seeking to focus on client’s perception of reality
Experiential- Client is being asked to come to understand about what and how they are
thinking, feeling and doing as they interact with the therapist and the other people in the world
Existential- Person takes resposnibility for their destiny and identity
Awareness- a key element here is helping the client come to an awareness of what he or she is doing
and experiencing. Through exploration of energy and energy blocks, avoidance of emotions and using
fantasies distinguishing between what is in the figure and what is in the background
The Now- our power is in the present. The only moment that is significant is the present. For many,
the power of present is lost
