Marine Electrical Technology

Module 2
1. Different Electrical diagrams and their uses.
Electrical Diagrams
• There are various types of diagrams, which shows how an electrical
circuit operates.

• Symbols are used to represent items of equipment.

• The ship builder provides a complete set of ships’ electrical diagrams.

• It is important to study these diagrams to be able to read and

understand them completely, and to use them as an aid in locating
electrical faults.

• Ship’s diagrams are regarded as an essential tool when carrying out

work on electrical equipment.

• The basic types of diagrams in general use for electrical work are: Block
diagram, System diagram, Circuit diagram and Wiring diagram.
BLOCK DIAGRAM

• A block diagram shows in simplified form, the main

inter-relationships of the elements in a system and how the
system works or may be operated.

• Such diagrams are often used to depict control systems and other
complex relationships.

• These diagrams state the function of each block, but usually give
no information of the components in each block, or how the blocks
are interconnected.
SYSTEM DIAGRAM

• A system diagram shows the main features of a system and its

bounds, without necessarily showing cause-to-effect.

• Its main use is to illustrate the ways of operating the system.

• Detail is omitted in order to make the diagram as clear as possible,

and so easily understood.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

• A circuit diagram shows in full, the functioning of a circuit.

• All essential parts and connections are depicted by means of symbols

arranged to show the operation as clearly as possible but without regard
to the physical layout of the various items, their parts or connections.

• Although there are International agreements as to the symbol to be

used to represent electrical components, there may be various symbols
representing the same component.

• The use of a circuit diagram is to enable to understand the operation of

the circuit, to follow each sequence in the operation from the moment
of initiating the operation (start) to the final act (stop).

• If the equipment fails to operate correctly, the sequence of operations

can be followed until the failed operation is identified.

• All the components involved in the faulty operation can then be

identified and this helps to locate the faulty component.
• There is no need to examine the other components that are known to
function correctly and have no influence on the fault; thus the work is
simplified.

• A circuit diagram is thus an essential tool for trouble shooting.

• The electrical connections of a motor starter is shown in the given

circuit diagram.

• The moving contacts of a relay or contactor is not shown in the figure.

• Instead a common number or letter identifies the coil and its related
contacts. For example, contactor coil ‘CC-2’ drives two auxiliary contacts
identified as ‘CC-1’ and ‘CC-2’.

• Each wire connection is identified by a number, which may be found on

a numbered sleeve on each wire at its termination on a component in
the actual starter.
WIRING DIAGRAM
• A wiring diagram shows the detailed wiring and connections between
components or items of equipment and in some cases the routing of these
connections.

• It also shows the approximate position of the components in the actual

equipment.

• It may be shown completely or simply represented by a block with the

necessary terminals clearly marked.

• Lines of different thicknesses can be used to differentiate between the power

and control connections.

• It is quite difficult to use it to work out the sequential operation of the circuit.

• It is mainly to guide one how to construct and connect the equipment.

• It is of little use in trouble shooting apart from identifying the exact position of
suspect components and terminals.
