Types of Drawing

The document discusses the different types of technical drawings. It begins by explaining that technical drawings are graphical representations of ideas or products that are used to define, design, and communicate technical information needed for manufacturing. There are two main types of drawings - artistic drawings and technical drawings. Technical drawings must unambiguously convey all necessary information, while artistic drawings are open to interpretation. Some common types of technical drawings mentioned include design sketches, layout drawings, assembly drawings, detail drawings, casting drawings, and fabrication drawings. Each serves a distinct purpose in the design and manufacturing process.

TYPES OF DRAWING

MR. BENJIE D. ANGELES

Objectives:
1. Identify the different types of
technical drawing
2. Explain drawing and sketches
3. Draw different types of technical
drawing
Introduction

Technical design and

drawing – commonly
referred to as drafting
– use a graphic
language to
communicate ideas.
This language, developed and used by
engineers, designers, and drafters,
serves as an essential tool from the
beginning of a product’s development
to production.
Technical drawing is basically tool and
not a specialized field or subject
matter. Industry uses this tool to
create and produce a variety of items.
Technical drawings play an essential
role in design, manufacturing,
processing, and production. Every
industrial nation employs a large
number of drafter.
Technical drawings are graphical
representations of an idea or product
that must be processed,
manufactured, or constructed.
Engineers, designers, drafters use the
drawing and design process to define,
establish, create, and transfer
technical information. All machines,
devices, and products are graphically
designed before they can be
manufactured and used.
Drawings are prepared
on drafting boards using
traditional drafting tools
and instruments and on
computers. Computer
aided design and drafting
(CAD) is a tool found in
many companies.
It is not uncommon to see CAD
systems interspersed among drafting
tables. Some small companies use
traditional drafting exclusively. Many
large companies have converted
entirely to CAD for engineering,
design, and drafting.
Types of drawing: Artistic and Technical
Drawing is a tool used by people to
design a product, solve a problem, or
transfer an idea into reality. Almost
everything that exists in the world
today was drawn first. Look around.
The buildings in which you live and
work; the appliances in your home;
the system that support your life. Few
items get manufactured or produced
without a drawing.
In general, the two types of drawing
are artistic and technical. Artistic
drawings are well outside the scope of
this text. An artistic drawing has many
techniques and expressions that are
not used in technical drawings.
First of all, a technical
drawing must
communicate the same
thing to every user or
reader of the drawing,
whereas the artistic
drawing is usually ARTISTIC DRAWING

interpreted differently
by everyone who sees it.
Imagine if a technical drawing meant
something different to each user!
Some drawing of a technical nature,
however, incorporate the use of
artistic techniques. These are referred
to as technical illustrations.
Technical drawings are
meant to be used to
transfer technical
information. The drawing
must contain all
information required to
bring the concept, product,
or idea into reality. TECHNICAL DRAWING

Dimensions, notes, views,

specifications are required
for a complete drawing.
The user of the drawing may be a great
distance from the person who
completed it. Therefore, technical
drawings must contain everything
needed for proper interpretation of
the design.
Types of technical drawing
This text is primarily concerned with
drawings of mechanical parts –
machined parts, castings, and
weldments. Various types of drawing
associated with mechanical design and
drafting. The following are considered
standard types of drawings in this
field:
Design sketches
Sketches of initial design ideas,
requirements, calculations, and
concepts. Sketches are used to convey
the design parameter to the layout
designer.
Lay out drawings
Layout drawings are made to develop
the initial design of a unit or machine.
A layout drawing must show all the
information necessary to make an
assembly or a detail drawing.
Assembly drawings
Assembly drawings show a number of
detail parts or subassemblies that are
joined together to perform a specific
function. These parts, when joined
together, are usually recognized as a
unit.
Detail drawings
A detail drawing shows all
information necessary to
determine the final form or
to purchase a part. The detail
drawing must show a
complete and exact
description of the part
including shapes, dimensions,
tolerances, surface finish, and
heat treatment, either
specified or implied.
Casting drawing
Separate casting drawings are
usually not required. Normal
practice is to show the necessary
casting dimensions along with
the machining dimensions on
the detail drawing. When a
casting drawing is used, it
contains only information
needed to cast it. Dimensions for
machining and finishing are not
contained in this document.
Fabrication drawing
Fabrication drawings are made for parts
with permanently fixed pieces. The
method of fastening is called out on the
drawing with symbols or other standard
methods. Welded and riveted parts are
examples of projects that require
fabrication drawings.
