MYP 4 Physics Sample Paper Terms -1

Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding

Question 1:

Source 1

The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only
converted from one form of energy to another. This means that a system always has the same amount
of energy, unless it's added from the outside.

Question 1a
Anya and Yaj are watch, two of their friends play a tennis match.

Anya says, "I think that when the ball is going over the net it only has kinetic energy".

Yaj says, "I think that when the ball is going over the net, it has kinetic energy and gravitational
potential energy".

Who is correct, Anya or Yaj? Explain your answer.

Question 1b

As the group of students enjoys a roller coaster ride. They are thinking about the transformation of
energy and the motion of the roller coaster.

A car on a rollercoaster is stationary at the top of a slope.

Source 2

a) It has a weight of 6,500 N and a potential energy of 217,000 J. Calculate how

high above the ground it is.

b) Justify the statement “When it reaches the bottom, its energy is lower than
expected.”

c) Suggest two ways to improve the efficiency of the rollercoaster car.

Question 2:

A family goes on holiday in a car and decides to visit NASA. To stop the journey
being boring for Sam and his sister Annie every half an hour they note down
the distance they have travelled since they left home. They then plot the graph
shown in Fig. 1.1.
Fig 1.1

The first half hour and the last half hour of their journey are on small roads. The
rest of the journey is on major roads.

Answer the following questions using information from Fig. 1.1.

i. Calculate for how many hours were they travelling on major

roads?

ii. State how far did they travel in total

on small roads,

on major roads?

iii. Theyhad two refreshment stops whilst on the journey. On Fig. 1.1, clearly mark
or state the time where they had these stops. A(i)

iv. Apart from the times when they stopped, during which section of the journey
was
theirspeedslowest? Explain your answer. A(iii)

v. Calculate the average speed for the whole journey. Your answer must include
the unit.

Criteria B-C: Inquiring and Designing & Processing and Evaluating

Question 3
A student decided to study the energy conversion from wind to electrical with the help of a working
model of the system.
He was doing a research on conversion of wind energy to electric energy. He tested the relationship of
distance of wind turbine from the wind source and its effects on the output voltage produced by the
wind turbine. A voltmeter is used to measure the output voltage produced from the turbine. The
student used the setup given below in the picture to conduct his experiment.
Source 7

a) Formulate an inquiry question for his investigation. B(i)

b) Identify the independent, dependent and control variables for this experiment and explain how
each of them will be manipulated to collect relevant data. B(iii)
Independent variable:
Dependent variable:
Controlled variable:
b) Formulate and justify a testable hypothesis about the relationship between the variables for this
study. B(ii)
c) Describe the effect an unexpected change of the control variable would have on the independent
and dependent variables.
Independent variable:
Dependent variable:
d) For the variables in part (a), design a method to record appropriate data and explain how the data
will be collected to test the relationship you predicted. B(iv)
e) State at least two precaution that the MYP student must take during the experiment. B(iv)

Question 4

The model made by the student Ivan was shown to the class and a group of students decided to test
the model for different shapes of blades. Student had completed the first run of tests, for the power
generated. They investigated the power produced by windmill using new and old blades. Given below
(Source 8) is the data collected by the student from the test conducted.

Source 8

As you know, the relationship between the power produced and the speed of the wind should follow
this equation
P = kw³. Calculate the value of k for the new blade at each wind speed using this equation. Where P is
the power and w is the wind speed.

a) A graph has been plotted(Source 9) to compare the power output using the old and the new
blades.

Source 9

a) Label the two axis and provide a suitable title for the
graph. C(i)
X axis
Y axis
Title

b) With the help of the graph plotted, explain the relation between wind speed and Power
output. C(ii)
b) In the beginning of investigation, the Ivan wrote the hypothesis as “As the wind speed increase the
Power output will increase” Evaluate the validity of the hypothesis on the basis of data collected by
the student for this experiment [Ciii]
c) Evaluate the validity of the method by using information from the data table used for decision
making. (one strength and two limitations) [Civ]
d) Suggest one improvement in this method and one extension for the investigation used for effective
decision making. [Cv]

Criterion D: Reflecting on the impacts of science

Question 5:

Vinisha has designed a mobile ironing cart, which uses solar panels to power a steam iron box. This
can be powered by pre-charged batteries, electricity or a diesel-powered generator in the absence of
sunlight. The most important benefit of a solar ironing cart is that it eliminates the need of coal for
ironing. The vendors can move around and offer services at the doorstep for increasing their daily
earning. For earning extra income, the ironing cart can be fitted with a coin-operated GSM PCO, USB
charging points and mobile recharging.

Watch the video to understand how the ironing cart works.

a) State an environmental issue that is solved?
b) Explain how has science been applied to address the specific problem
c) Discuss and evaluate the implication of choosing Solar Ironing cart
i. an economic perspective,
ii. environmental perspectives and
iii. social perspectives
You should support your answer with scientific explanations. write two positive and two negative
implications in each case.
