1.1 OBJECTIVE: MEASUREMENT OF POWER AND POWER FACTOR IN A SINGLE PHASE

AC SERIES INDUCTIVE CIRCUIT AND STUDY OF IMPROVEMENT OF POWER
FACTOR USING CAPACITOR.

1.2 APPARATUS REQUIRED:

SL.NO. NAME OF TYPE SYMBOL RANGE QUANTITY

APPRATUS
1. Ammeter Digital 0-10A 1

2. Voltmeter Digital 0 – 300V 1

3. Single phase - - 1
inductive load
4. Variac Manual Type 0 – 240V 1

5. Capacitor Electrolytic - 1

6. Connecting wire PVC Type - As required

7. Wattmeter Digital - 1

1.3 THEORY: Real power (P) in a single phase ac series inductive circuit can be measured either
by wattmeter or with the help of three ammeters.
P= VICosΦ Watts
Alternative words used for Real Power (Actual Power, True Power, Watt-full Power, Useful
Power, Real Power, and Active Power) and denoted by (P) and measured in units of Watts
(W).
Reactive Power represent that the energy is first stored and then released in the form of magnetic
field or electrostatic field in case of inductor and capacitor respectively.
Q = V I SinΦ VAR
In an AC circuit, the product of the r.m.s voltage and the r.m.s current is called apparent
power which is denoted by (S) and measured in units of Volt-amp (VA).
S = V I VA

1.8 DISCUSSION:

1.9 PRECAUTIONS:
1. All connections should be tight and correct.
2. Switch off the supply when not in use.
3. Reading should be taken carefully.
4. Don’t touch the live terminals.

1.10 PRE-REQUISITES:
Q1. What are Real Power, Reactive Power and Apparent Power? What is relation amongst them?
Q2. What do you mean by power factor?

1.11 POST-REQUISITES:
Q1. What is the real power consumed in a purely inductive or purely capacitive circuit?
Q2. What are the methods to improve power factor?
