What I Need to Knowing
1. Name a circle.
2. Identify the radius, diameter, chord, and arcs.
3. Distinguish the difference between a central angle and an inscribed angle.
Use the attached answer sheets for your answers and solutions.
Here is an outline of the different parts of your learning module. Be guided with the
description on the different parts of this module.

15. If arc SM measures 1000, What is the measure of arc ST? A
a. 300 b. 600 c.800 d. 900
What’s In
Let us begin this module by having a quick review of your previous lesson on
the relationship of exterior and interior angles of a convex polygon.
Activity 1: Complete Me
Direction: Complete the table below. Use the concepts learned from the previous
lesson on the relationships of interior and exterior angles of convex polygons.
What’s New
In this lesson, we will be discussing about illustrating a circle and the terms
related to it. To start with the lesson, let us familiarize ourselves with the terms you
be meeting in this lesson.

7 CIRCLES
DEFINITIONS
A Circle is the set of points in a plane equidistant from a
given point called the center of the circle.
A radius of a circle is a line segment from the center to any
point of the circle.
A diameter of a circle is a chord that passes through the
center.
A chord of a circle is a line segment whose endpoints lie on
the circle.
REMEMBER THAT:
A circle is named by its center.
You can draw as many radii
and diameters on a circle.
A radius is half of a
diameter.
5
EXAMPLE 1: Refer to the figure at the right.
a. Name the circle
b. Identify a diameter
c. Identify two radii
d. Identify two chords
e. If m AB = 6 cm, what is m OC ?
Answers: a. Cicrle 0
b. AB
c. OB and OA
d. PQ and AB
e. ½ (m AB) = m OC
½ (6 cm) = 3 cm
m OC = 3 cm
Try this!
Activity 3: Refer to the figure at the right.
DEFINITIONS
An arc of a circle is two points on the circle and the
continuous part of the circle between the two points.
A semicircle is an arc of a circle whose endpoints are the
points of the diameter. It measures exactly 1800.
A minor arc is an arc of a circle that is smaller than a
semicircle. It measures less than 1800.
A Major arc is an arc of a circle that is larger than a
semicircle. THAT: greater than 1800.
It measures
REMEMBER

EXAMPLE 2: Refer to the figure at the right. D
a. Name 2 semicircles
b. Identify at least 3 minor arcs C
c. Identify at least three major arcs
d. If the measure of ^ A BC is 1200,what
is the measure of CD ^? E
ANSWERS: a. ^ DEA and ^ DBA B
b. ^AB, ^ ^
BC , CD
BDE, ^
c. ^ ^
ACE, CDA
d. m ^ACD – m ^ ^
A B C = mCD A

180 – 120 = 60
Try This!
Activity 4: . Refer to the figure at the right. Y
a. Name 2 semicircles
b. Identify at least 3 minor arcs
c. Identify at least 3 major arcs
d. If the measure of ^ FN is 900,what
is the measure of ^ NU ? F U
DEFINITIONS
A central angle is the angle formed in the interior of the
circle whose vertex is at the center and the sides contain
radii of the circle.
An inscribed angle is the angle formed in the interior of the circle
whose vertex is a point of a circle and the sides are chords of the
circle. REMEMBER THAT:
The measure m of
an inscribed angle
is half the measure
m of a central
angle.

Direction: Identify whether the given statement is true or false. If it is True
write T and if it is false write F.
_____1. A diameter is achord.
_____2. A chord is a diameter.
_____3. A radius is a chord.
_____4. A radius is half of a diameter.
_____5. The center of a circle is an exterior point of the circle.
_____6. A circle is named by its center
_____7. The measure of an inscribed angle is twice the measure of a central
angle.
_____8. A circle has a unique radius and diameter.
