Differentiate between andragogy and
pedagogy.
Discuss the principles of adult learning.
Apply adult learning principles in educational
settings.
Introduction
 As people progress from
childhood to adulthood, their
mode of learning changes.
 Progress is not in age. It is rather
in psychological and intellectual
maturity.
 Higher education institutions
shift from teacher-centered
education (pedagogy) to learner-
centered education (andragogy).
 Adults need to be assisted in
understanding themselves as
learners.

Learning:
Long-term change in mental representations
(behaviors) as a result of experience.
The act of acquiring new, or modifying and
reinforcing existing, knowledge, behaviors,
skills, values, or preferences and may involve
synthesizing different types of information.

Learning cannot be said to occur unless


there is a change in Behavior.

Learning Theories:
The underlying mechanisms that are involved
in learning and how and why it takes place.
An attempt to describe how people and animals
learn, thereby helping us understand the
inherently complex process of learning.

Adults have a desire to know why they should learn
something in order to learn it effectively.
Adults are intrinsically and extrinsically
motivated to learn.
Motivation is the natural human capacity to direct
energy toward a goal.
