Read "Barry the Bat" and answer questions 1 to 6.

Barry the Bat

Barry the bat was just three months old. Sometimes, when Barry was
sleeping snugly upside down in his cave, he would wake up suddenly
and get afraid of the light. Whenever he became frightened like this,
he would give out a short chirp. Mom would come flying over right
away, using her sonar to prevent herself from hitting the walls of the
cave.
"Dear, are you all right?" she asked in her lovely high-pitched voice,
one such night.
"Well, I suddenly woke up, and I'm sort of afraid of the light," replied Barry.
“Afraid of the light? You don't need to be afraid of the light. Here, why don't we move you over to a
darker part of the cave, so that you can feel a little safer."
"But mom, can you leave the darkness on all day?" chirped Barry. "If I need to get up to go to the
bathroom, I don't want it to be all scary and light."
"Sure, dear. That way, if you need to go to the bathroom you can find your way easily by
using your sonar."
"Thanks, Mom. Can you give me a hug before going to sleep?"
"Certainly, so long as you immediately hang upside down and go to sleep."
"But Mom, what if I hang upside down and still don't fall asleep?"
"Oh, you'll fall asleep in no time at all. Once you get all comfortable hanging upside down,
you'll just feel drowsy and fall asleep. You know, I'm feeling so tired that I could just hang
upside down and fall right asleep myself. Good night, dear."
"Good night, Mom," chirped Barry as his upside down head swayed off to sleep.

Read "The Master Chess Player" and answer questions 16 to 21.

The Master Chess Player

In April 2007, Viswanathan Anand added yet another feather to
his cap by winning the XXIV Super Grandmaster tournament in
Linares. For the first time, Anand was right on top of the FIDE
(World Chess Federation) charts*.
The chess prodigy* was born on 11 December, 1969 in Chennai.
His mother introduced him to the game when he was hardly five.
The following year she enrolled him at the club, where Manuel
Aaron, India's first International Master coached young chess
enthusiasts. At that time Aaron thought of Anand as a pest.
Whenever Aaron suggested a move, Anand would come up with
an alternative move. Aaron's irritation, however, turned to
respect when Anand, aged 13, defeated him.
The victory gave Anand a big boost and he won the National Championship and the Asia Junior
Championship twice in a row. At 15, he became the country's youngest International
Grandmaster.
Swiftly, Anand went from one victory to another and in 1992, he won the world's highest-rated
tournament beating Garry Kasparov.
In 2000, he won the FIDE title, becoming the first Indian to do so. The story goes that when Anand
called up his mother from Teheran to inform her about his victory, she said, "If you'd attacked

Wood Clay Graphite

Clay lies just under the ground. Big

mechanical diggers dig it out from the
ground. Big machines crush graphite and
clay into a fine powder. Graphite is a soft
black rock, deep under the ground. Miners
use drills to bring the graphite out. The
wood comes from cedar* trees.

Method:
1. Graphite and clay are mixed to form a paste. For
colouring pencils, dye is added to the paste. Next
the paste is squeezed into long thin pieces called
leads. Then the lead pieces are baked until they
are hard.
2. Saws* cut the wood of the cedar tree into ‘Pencil
Blocks’. These saws then shape the blocks of
slats with grooves slats with lead wood into pieces called slats. Long, narrow
cuts, called 'grooves' are made on these wooden
slats. A piece of lead is stuck into each groove
with glue in one slat. A second grooved slat is
placed over the first grooved slat with the lead
pieces. These two slats are stuck together
making it look like a ‘sandwich’.
3. A machine cuts these sandwiched slats into
separate pencils. The pencils are dipped in
paints to coat the wood. And the pencils are
