TOV%, USG%, offensive rebounds” “Turnovers per 100 plays”
OWS, OBPM “Percentage of plays assisted while on the floor”
Defense DRB%, STL%, “Percentage of available defensive rebounds” GREEN
BLK%, DWS, “possessions that ended with a steal” “number of
DBPM wins contributed… due to defense”
Overall Play PER, TRB%, “Per minute production” “available rebounds BLUE
WS, WS/48, grabbed” “number of wins contributed by a
BPM, VORP player” “(both) team points per 100 possessions”

Coded “Raw” Data: Here, insert LEGIBLE images or screenshots that show the coding you
have done to your raw data. In other words, show me which segments of your data you have
coded, what colors and symbols you used to code your data, the words you used to code, and so
on.
Reflection: Briefly answer the following questions. (Your responses should be 1-3 sentences per
question.)
1. What patterns do you notice in your data? What words, phrases, or ideas seem to repeat?
a. I found that my data typically used things like “per 100 possessions” and
“offense” and “defense.”
2. What conclusions can you draw from the patterns you identified?
a. They all seem to be stats that take a hefty amount of information to create a
specific statistic.
3. Which of the codes in your “data coding key” seem to best explain your data or answer
your research question? Why do you think so?
a. None best answer my question as this is the statistic itself, but it does play a
part in the understanding of why these stats illicit so much controversy in the
community of basketball analytics.
4. What did you learn by engaging in this coding process?
a. I’ve learned why people feel the way they do about advanced statistics. The
basketball analytics community doesn’t typically like advanced statistics as
they are better observed as teams stats.
