Depiction
The CFM International CFM56 (U.S. military
designation F108) series is a family of high bypass
turbofan aircraft engines made by CFM International
(CFMI), with a thrust range of 18,000 to 34,000
pounds-force (80 to 150 kilonewtons). CFMI is a 50-50
joint-owned company of SNECMA, France and GE
Aviation (GE), USA.
Development
The CFM56 first ran in 1974 and, despite initial political
problems, is now one of the most common turbofan aircraft
engines in the world, with more than 20,000 having been
built in four major variants.

It is most widely used on the Boeing 737 airliner and,

under military designation F108, replaced the Pratt & Whitney
JT3D engines on many KC-135 Stratotankers in the 1980s,
creating the KC-135R variant of this aircraft.
It is also the only engine (CFM56-5C) used to power
the Airbus A340-200 and 300 series. The engine
(CFM56-5A and 5B) is also fitted to Airbus A320 series aircraft.
System 1:
Starting
The starting system of the engine utilizes pressurized air to drive
a turbine at high speed. This turbine drives the engine high
pressure rotor through a reduction gear and the engine
accessory drive system.

Air Starter:
The starter is install on the
aft side of the accessory
gearbox, in the right-hand
position (aft looking
forward).
Starter Air Valve and Starter
System 2:
Ignition
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) controls and monitors the start
sequence either in automatic or manual mode.
System 3:
Engine Fuel and Control
The engine fuel system is designed to provide fuel flow into the
combustion chamber and servo fuel for compressor and engine
clearance system actuation.
Fuel Pump
The LP stage of the fuel pump is of the centrifugal type.
It delivers a boost pressure to the HP stage to avoid
pump cavitation.
Hydromechanical Fuel Control(HMC)
It receives electrical signals from the electronic control unit (ECU) and
converts these electrical input signals through torque
motors/servo valves into engine fuel flow and hydraulic signals
to various external systems.

System 4:
Oil
It Lubricates and cools the Bearing of the Forward and
Aft Sumps. Also lubricates Bearings and Gears in the
Transfer and Accessory Gear Boxes.

Chip Detectors
The oil which has lubricated the engine bearings, accessory
gearbox and TGB is scavenged by 4 pumps protected by a
strainer equipped with a magnetic chip detector.

TGB : Tail Rotor Gear Box

Main Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger
The oil/fuel heat exchanger cools the oil by using fuel
as a cooling medium.
System 5:
Engine Indicating
ECAM Upper Display
The engine primary parameters are permanently displayed on
the ECAM upper display.
The thrust limit is shown in % on the left side for:

TO/GO = Take Off/Go Around Power

CL = Climb Power
MCT = Max Continuous Thrust
Flex = Flex Take Off (The Temperature is shown behind the limit)
M/REV = Max Reverse Power
FOB = Fuel On Board
NAC = Nacelle
N2 Speed Sensor
Detects the rotational speed of the HP rotor assembly. It transmits the signal
to the Engine Vibration Monitoring Unit(EVMU), ECU channel A and B.
