RETROSPECTION

Among all the experiences I had in my life, Field Study was indeed a great experience of all. It
was a roller coaster ride for me because I’ve come in this field with a little knowledge about field
study, observation and teaching assistantship. I started my field with lot of doubts and what if’s
because I am not fully prepared in this field. I even question myself if I can finish and make this
field memorable. Until then, I meet all of my mentors, teachers and even friend of mine in my
field. I meet them all coincidence. Specifically, my mentor when I was in Grade 10, She is my
resource teacher in my field, indeed it was a small world for me to be with her, and I think we
are fit with each other due to some commonality we have. Back then, she was my teacher and
she even ask me to get her lunch in canteen, in return she even buys some snacks and food for
me. I appreciate how genuine she is, because when I was in Grade 10, I don’t have snacks, I just
went on school with coffee and a pack of lunch. We are in a social class where we just eat for
twice a day, because our life was very poor. I am just thankful for her because I survive my high
school with limited resources and financial but then when I graduated in Malinao National High
School, I receive an award, I was the Top 1.5 with the most intelligent student in Malinao, I
wasn’t expecting that to happen, because I am not very smart but I know one thing for sure for
myself, it is because I was very hardworking student, even the non-teaching staff even notice me
how good and diligent I am when I was in high school. Moreover, my mentor in MAPEH is
always supported on my performances, he loves to see me in stage and performing dance. He
even pays for my outfit during the Street Dance Competition. He was very thoughtful and during
my field he see me and he is so happy that I am pursuing my dream and passion in life. Also, I
saw a lot of familiar faces on my field, I see my classmates pursuing teaching as their profession,
I see also my circles that enjoying their field study with their respective majors and it makes me
happy because they taking their path with full of love and compassion. Furthermore, during my
field of study, I was a bit shock on the environment though I came from Malinao National High
School, I was bit surprise on how students behave and how they interact with the teachers and
with their classmates. That’s the reason why Ma’am Gina always talk to me personally. Because
she wants me to be aware of the student’s attitude, behavior, interaction with students and how
they react in a given scenario. Also, when it comes to classroom management, noise is always on
top tier. Students nowadays are very loud and aggressive; teachers are implementing their class
rules in order to solve this issue. My resource teacher is very strict because she reminds me to
become professional, never look down and manipulate by your students. If they are making fuss,
then be professional to solve the issues. It’s okay to be friendly with your students but never let
them abuse your kindness because that’s the time that they are just see you as their buddy or
nobody. My resource teacher always reminds me to do those things in order to rule and manage
the class. Additionally, in terms of class discussion, she always uses her lapel in order to hear the
sound of her voice during class discussion. Well, same with me, I do have low voices but I am
not afraid to talk in front it just that I have a low voice doesn’t mean I am not confident enough
to talk in front. I learn also on how to be funny, cheerful and mad during class discussion and
observation. Many students are so talkative and very clumsy, sometimes they are not following
the command of my teacher until then I created an informal game for them. I was so happy to see
them enjoying and learning through my prepared game. I learn how to approach them and talk
with them.
One of the gain insights on this field study journey is that I was able to show myself in the field,
without pretending that I cannot do the task because basically I am really open with my resource
teacher that I cannot do this because I don’t have the knowledge and then she just smile and
teach me on how to do things. I work with her naturally, just like the old days. Also, classroom
management is one of the difficult tasks to do because there a lot of students and you have only
yourself. So, I was inspired by my resource teacher because she did all of this by herself. And
during class discussion, in order to grasp the context, my resource teacher uses mother tongue in
order to impart the lesson to the students. She did all of this because her intention is pure, she
wants to help students learn and improve. Also, to those students that has problem on reading,
she even helps them during the class discussion, and with the help of me, I facilitate and assist
her in order to help students improve their reading skills. Poor reading skills is one of the
problems we encounter, even my classmates also observe this problem. And this makes the class
discussion difficult to make because of their basic skills. This skill is the foundation of a
student’s knowledge and they should master it in order to prepare them for the next advancement
of their year level in school. Without this basic knowledge, they will face uncertainties in the
future. Knowing all of this is just the problem and that thing I observe during my time in the
field. I was amaze on my resource teacher, she handles it and now she even helps me to figure
out more about the classroom and other things. These observations of mine was a great power
that I will use for teaching internship in the next semester. This will serve as my fuel to know
more about student’s behavior, way of learning, their individual differences, way of learning and
even their styles in learning. It is very important to know the students before teaching them
because you will know how to instruct them and attack them on your personal strategies and
methods in teaching. Above all, it was a great experience to know my students, my teachers, my
classroom management rules, observe problems and make an automatic solution. This was a
great experience for me, the activities we had by my students, the relationship I build with them.
And also, the bond that I have with my resource teacher was good and memorable learnings for
me because I really learn a lot from her. She is my eye opener with all my not knowing things
and my guide to all my unseen truth about teaching. It was indeed a noble a profession and a
very hard task by the teacher to do during their profession. These teachers are the hero that must
appreciate and acknowledge by individual and government because they have the hardest
responsibility in the country. This reflection, compile sheets, growth portfolio, problem,
observation, instructional materials, action research was a great indicator that I enjoy my field
study in my alma mater. I enjoy, learn, relearn and unlearn the things and be able to adapt and
apply it to my future endeavors. These experiences and memories I have is a great aspect that
teaching is a continuous process, there is no doubt for that, that is teaching and education
students are the warrior and survivor of their ultimate dream in life.
