The Meaning of Marketing

1 The term “marketing” as used here is that activity at the core of the marketing
concept, which we must firs of all examine.

3 According to the marketing concept, when any idea for a new product or service
is conceived, the first fundamental question to ask is whether potential users of the
5 product or service will share the enthusiasm of the inventor. In other words, successful
business enterprise ultimately rests on market opportunity and market opportunity is
ultimately governed by user preferences and satisfactions.

8 The priority of user preference is the first important element in the business
philosophy called the marketing concept. The word “philosophy” here means the general
10 principle upon which the business is operated, that is the system adopted for the conduct
of the business organization.

B- Comprehension Check

There are some examples in the text of 2-noun phrases being used together.

When 2 nouns are used together, the first noun is used as an adjective.

- User preference

N.B: This structure (2-noun phrases ) is widely used in English.

TASK 1:

Re-write the following sentences making similar 2-noun phrases with the highlighted words.

Example: The most popular goods bought by consumers are TV’s, cars and radios.

The most popular consumer goods are Tv’s, cars and radios.

TASK 2:

What are the 2-noun phrases corresponding with the following:

1 . A permit allowing you to work is a WORK PERMIT

2 . An increase in your salary is a SALARY INCREASE

4 . The chairman of a company is a COMPANY CHAIRMAN

5 . Planning the size of one’s family is a FAMILY PLANNING
