1. SCOPE
This Scope is to derive the methodology for the Concrete masonry unit, works to be
Performed for the construction work of NWC (hereinafter referred to as “CLIENT”) ‘H652
SOUTH DHAHRAN WATER PROJECT–LOT1 Project ‘(hereinafter referred to as
“Project”), to qualify and comply with all the Client Standards.

3. DEFINITIONS
All the definitions mentioned in the Documents have priority over other Standards and
any deviation of these standards shall be brought to attention of the Client. It means to
the client representative for resolution.
All terms used in the development of this procedure are defined below:

4. RESPONSIBILITIES:

4.1 The Project manager shall ensure that all operations related to Concrete Masonry
unit, works have been risk assessed and necessary control measures have been
implemented to carry out the task in a safely manner.

4.2 Project QC Engineer Initiate the QA/QC Procedures, MOMs, Reports and Requests
approval to Qc Manager. Shall perform a variety of inspection functions with minimal
supervision. Initiate any nonconformance’s discovered during the test or inspections.
Organizational freedom to identify quality problems. Access to RFI system. Shall
notify Request for Inspection (RFI) minimum 24 hours for site work and 48 hours for
weekend inspections.

4.3 Contractor’s Construction engineer shall review and confirm that all Concrete
Masonry unit, works are being implemented as per the activities stated in this
Method statement and in compliance with the (Client) codes, standards and project
specifications.

4.4 Contactor’s Supervisor shall supervise all general Concrete masonry unit activities
as required by the project drawings and specifications. He shall prepare all the
Necessary permits in advance and get it approved from the client designated
representative for the execution.

5. METHODOLGIES
5.1 MATERIAL FOR CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS
The material to be used shall be decided and approved in accordance to the type,
quality and strength of all materials of which the Concrete masonry unit works are
made shall be subjected to specific approval by the Client.

5.1.1. GENERAL
a) Materials for all “Concrete Masonry Work” shall be as specified in the
relevant ASTM standards.

1) Concrete bricks and blocks shall comply with the relevant requirement of
ASTM C 90.
b) Units shall be sound and free of cracks or other defects that interfere
with the proper placement of the units or significantly impair the strength
or permanence of the construction.
c) Dimensions of concrete masonry blocks shall be manufacturer’s standard units
with nominal face dimensions as specified on the Contract drawings.
d) Size, color and other physical properties shall conform to the approved
sample.

5.2 MORTAR
5.2.1 Mortar is the one of the basic components of masonry construction.
a. As a bedding material for placing and levelling the block unit.
b. To bond the units together.
c. Provide shear strength and compressive strength between units.
d. Allows for movement and elasticity between units.
e. Seals irregularities between units and provides a weather tight seal.
f. Can be used to accent architectural appearance by using various joint tools.
5.2.2 MATERIAL
a. Ordinary Portland cement
b. Aggregate for mortar
Both sand and crushed stone shall be according to ASTM C144.
c. Water
Water shall be clean and free amounts of oils, acids, alkalis, salts, organic
Material or other substances that are deleterious to mortar or any metal in the
Wall.

5.3 MIXING
5.3.1 Mortar shall be mixed and used in accordance with SBC 305-Masonry Structures
Requirements.

5.4 REINFORCING
5.4.1 Reinforcing bar shall be deformed steel complying with requirements of ASTM
A615.
5.4.2 The reinforcing dowels are positioned in accordance with the Contract
Drawings.

5.4.3 Joint reinforcement shall comply with ASTM A 951.

5.5 SEQUENCE OF WORKS

5.5.1 PREPARATION

• Prior to placing masonry, remove laitance, loose aggregate and anything else that
would prevent mortar from bonding to the foundation.

• Concrete block shall be soaked prior to laying to avoid the loss of water from the
mortar mix

• Layout and put markings on the concrete surface the correct and final location of
blocks as per approved drawing.

• Check correct position for embedded and location of dowel rebar if not, provide
dowel bar to concrete surface as specified on the approved drawing.

5.5.2 INSTALLATION

• Build single- Wythe walls to the actual thickness of the masonry units, using
units of nominal thickness as shown or specified.

• Lay-up walls plumb and true to comply with specified tolerances, with courses level,
accurately spaced and coordinated with other work.

• Avoid the use of less than half-size units at corners, jambs and wherever
possible at other location.

• Do not install units with chipped or cracked edges on sight-exposed surfaces.

• Cut masonry units to be used in exposed surfaces, using motor-driven saws


to provide clean, sharp, unchipped edges. Cut units as required to provide pattern
shown and to fit adjoining work neatly. Use full-size units without cutting wherever
possible.

• Leave openings for equipment to be installed before completion of masonry work


After installation of equipment, complete masonry work to match work immediately.

• Block will be laid on full bed of mortar, Thickness of bed joints shall not be greater
than 12 mm and not less than 9 mm.

• Lay hollow concrete masonry units with full mortar coverage on horizontal and
vertical face shells. Bed webs in mortar in starting course on footings and

foundations walls and in all courses of piers, columns and pilasters, and where
adjacent to cells or cavities to be reinforced or filled with concrete or grout.

• Protection shall be required after finishing masonry and grouting work.

5.5.3 CURING
Cure concrete masonry construction by keeping moist, not saturated, for at least 4
days, The Contractor’s quality control supervisor shall determine the method to base
on the weather conditions.

6 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL

The quality of the works shall be on line with the CLIENT standards and in Accordance
with IFC drawings and other stages of works shall be reported to Client representative for
prior approval.
Contractor’s QA/QC Inspector shall closely monitor and assure Concrete masonry unit work
shall comply with project specifications and as per (Client) QA/QC requirements and shall
conduct frequent inspections and maintain all `Records as required by project QA/QC Program.

9 HEALTH, SAFETY AND RISK ASSESSMENT

The health and safety shall perform a splendid role in all construction activities to ensure
that all the works are being carried out in a safe manner and Creating a healthy
environment at site. All works performed by individuals shall comply with the Client health
and safety standards.
Contractor’s site supervisor shall conduct regular toolbox meeting and explain the
requirements of PPE and other special needs to create a safe working Environment. He
is responsible for achieving the target and the project Milestone.

Contractor’s Safety Inspector shall closely monitor and assure that all works are carried
out in highly safe manner, gearing the workers with full strength of Safety protective
equipment, preparation of safety barricading and dust control screening wherever
applicable in safe manner, safe workability of equipment to be used and fulfilling any
other additional safety needs as required during Work executions. He shall also check
and ensure that only qualified personnel are carrying out the equipment & machinery
related works.
Contractors shall appoint their own safety manager and he shall conduct Safety walks
around the site in weekly basis and prepares and submits a report to the client. Any
accidents occurred shall be informed immediately to the Company and recorded
accordingly.

9.1 Safety officer or safety coordinator shall be present full time on site during the
execution of works and shall be implemented a safety rules and regulation at site all
the time.
9.2 Daily toolbox meetings shall be conducted as mandatory requirements to describe
and discuss the safety related issues.
9.3 The works shall be risk assessed and proper guidance should be managed before,
implementation of every individual activity.

9.4 Following safety requirements shall be fulfilled:

9.4.1 Safety barricade shall be provided wherever necessary.

9.4.2 Necessary safety signboards shall be provided at work places as per safety
required.

9.4.3 All workers shall be provided with job specific Personal Protective Equipment.

9.4.4 Safety flickering lights shall be provided for vehicles working on longtime
hours especially on night hours.

9.4.5 The approving authority shall inspect all equipment checklists for all
machineries related to the activities before commencing the Works.

9.4.6 Working equipment shall be equipped with amber lights, horns Safety guards,
etc. as required and mentioned in safety Manuals.

9.4.7 Any incident at site shall be immediately reported to company and recorded.

9.4.8 Weekly safety statistics reports and safety performance reports etc. Shall be
prepared and recorded.

9.4.9 Daily safety task assignment shall be prepared.

9.4.10 Man, shelters shall be provided to protect the workers from adverse Climatic
condition, i.e. sand storm, high temperature.

9.5 Potable water source shall be provided for adequate numbers for workers

9.6 Following the material safety data sheet.
