7. MATERIALS AND TOOLS

Following is a list (not limited to) of the material to be utilized in masonry works
 Ceramic tiles
 Cement
 Daimond cutter/Tile cutter
 Levelling machine/ spirit levels
 Tile spacers
 Measuring tape
 Steel trowel
8. SEQUENCE OF WORK
 Approved shop drawing
 Material Approval
 MEP clearance Surface preparation
 Survey & Layout
 Logistics for arranging material and Equipment
 Installation of Tiles
 Grouting Ceramic Tile Installation Steps

9. DESCRIPTION OF WORKS / METHODOLOGY

9.1 General
 Ensure the MEP clearance obtained and all other under laying installations are approved
prior to start of tiling works.
 Working area to be restricted for unauthorized entry.
 The surface to which tiles are to be fixed shall be thoroughly dry before fixing commences
and free from all defects.
 The areas to be tiled shall be brushed clean and all traces of grease, oil, loose particle etc.
must be removed.
 Ensure that the laying of tiles shall be as per the direction and patter agreed with the
consultant.
 Before laying tiles obtain approval of setting out by consultant. Provide symmetry about
centre lines of the space or areas and adjust to minimize tile cutting.
 Lay out tile work so that tiles less than 1/2 full size do not occur and with minimum of
cutting.
 Carefully grind edges of cut tile. Ensure cut tiles are in corners and are equal on each wall
face.
9.2 WALL TILES INSTALLATION
 For concrete block walls and concrete walls to be finished with tiles, apply a leveling coat of
plaster minimum 12mm thickness, sufficient to cover the subtract and to make walls
vertical.
 Plaster shall be finished rough in order to have a strong key for tiling works.
 Plaster curing period shall be completed before start of tiling work.
 To ensure rows of tiles are truly horizontal, a level line shall be established to position the
starting course.
 Apply floated coat of adhesive to dry background for small area and comb the surface with
the recommended solid bed trowel. Apply thin even coat of adhesive to the backs of the
dry tiles.
 Press Tiles onto bedding with twisting/sliding action to give finished bed thickness of not
more than 4 mm.
 Tamp the tiles with rubber mallet to obtain required adhesion and level.
 Tiles shall be laid with the required spacing and spacers (2mm Minimum) shall be used to
align horizontal and vertical joints.
 Excessive mix/adhesive shall be removed with a damp cloth before the material has set
out.
 The vertical joint shall be maintained plumb for the entire through level and plane by
uniformly applied pressure.
 Approved grout material will be used as per manufacturer recommendation. Before
starting the grouting, tiles spacers have to remove and the gap between the tiles to be
cleaned properly.
 A well mix grout in thick paste consistency is applied with putty blade on the gaps. The
filling has to be done properly without leaving any air gaps.
 Then the excess grout is cleaned off from the tiles using a cleaning cloth or sponge.
 Tiles shall be extended into recess and under or behind equipment fixtures to form a
complete covering as indicated in drawings.
 Ensure cutting and grinding of tiles has taken care and protect the completed work from
any damages.

9.3 FLOOR TILES INSTALLTION

 Sand Bed under Floor Tiles, thickness should be maintained as necessary to obtain finish
floor levels indicated on Approved Shop Drawings and Ceramic Tile Designs.
 Manual spreading and compaction to obtain uniform depth and distribution. Remove
stones and foreign materials.
 Floor tiles are to be set using thick wet mortar bedding on uniformly distributed sand beds.
 Apply thin even coat of adhesive to the backs of the dry tiles and press tiles onto bedding
with twisting/sliding action to give finished bed thickness of not more than 4 mm.
 Tamp the tiles with rubber mallet to obtain required adhesion and level.
 Tiles shall be laid with the required spacing and spacers (2mm Minimum) shall be used to
align horizontal and vertical joints.
 Remove and reset for solid bearing tiles that gives hollow sound when tapped after
installation.
 Excessive mix/adhesive shall be removed with a damp cloth before the material has set
out.
