Subject: FPO Due Date: 27/01/2024: Assignment

The document contains an assignment with 14 questions related to separation processes and filtration. It includes deriving relationships for hydraulic radius, particle Reynolds number, terminal velocity, pressure drop in filtration, and cake filtration models. It also asks to determine specific cake resistance and filter medium resistance from experimental data, and asks if the cake is compressible based on the data.

2. Briefly explain the concept of sedimentation.
3. Differentiate between the following:
(i) Clarifying filters and cake filters
(ii) Superficial velocity and interstitial velocity in packed bed column.
(iii) Sedimentation and Filtration
(iv) Batch and Continuous thickeners
(v) Free settling and hindered settling.

6. Derive the relationship for Reynolds number of the particles for a packed bed using
equivalent diameter (= and superficial velocity ̅ ̅ . Where, ̅ is the average
interstitial velocity of the fluid in the bed? Also compare it with Reynolds number of the
particle defined by Ergun.
7. Derive the relation for terminal velocity of a particle moving through a fluid under the
action of gravity.
8. Derive the relation for terminal velocity of a particle moving in a fluid in a circular motion
under the action of centrifugal force (external force).
9. Derive the relationship between pressure drop across the filter, pressure drop at the start
of filtration and volume of filtrate collected in time t for a standard blocking mechanism
of filtration in clarifying filtration for the following two cases:
(a) for constant pressure filtration
(b) for constant rate filtration
10. derive a model equation for cake filtration of the following cases as given below:
(a) for constant pressure filtration
(b) for constant rate filtration
11. Briefly explain the most common type of continuous vacuum filter. Draw flow sheet for a
continuous vacuum filtration. Also write their advantages and disadvantages.

12. The volumetric flow rate during constant pressure filtration is

Where V is the total volume of filtrate collected in time t, and and are constants.
(a) Integrate the above equation to obtain a relation between V and t.
(b) Make a sketch of t/V versus V from your results.
(c) Given V = 1 litre at t = 41.3 s and V = 2 litre at t = 108.3 s. Find .

13. In a filtration process, if V is the volume of filtrate collected in time t, a general relation
can be given as

( )

Where are specific cake resistance, filter medium resistance, filter

area, concentration of solids in the slurry, viscosity of the filtrate and overall pressure
drop respectively.
(a) Filtration experiments were carried out at a constant pressure drop on slurry
containing 20 kg/m3 of CaCO3 in water. The data obtained from the plots (t/V) vs V at
two different pressure drops are given in the table below:

pressure drop Slope Intercept

(N/m2) 2
(s/litre ) (s/litre)

12.5 26.5

3.5 6.9

If the filter area is 0.09 m2 and the viscosity of the filtrate is 0.001 kg/m.s. Determine
the specific cake resistance and the filter medium resistance corresponding to each
pressure drop.
(b) Determine from the above data whether the cake is compressible?
