Objectives: (1 min)
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
K. Define a formal definition.
S. Construct formal definitions using sentence
pattern.
A. Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing
sentence pattern to construct formal
definitions accurately.

EXPLANATION PHASE

A formal definition is a one-sentence

explanation of the meaning of a word. The
primary reason to use formal definitions is to
avoid misunderstanding with your audience.

(in other words, this will provide clarity)

Examples:

 A classroom is a room where lessons

take place.
 Flag is a piece of cloth symbolizing an
organization or country.
 Shoes are type of material to be worn
on the feet.

In constructing a Formal Definition we must

use the sentence pattern: term = class +
distinguishing characteristic.

STA. CATALINA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Term - refers to the specific word or phrase

being defined.

Class – refers to a collective group of ideas,

concept or individual.

Distinguishing Characteristic - refers to a

defining trait or characteristic that sets apart a
particular entity or concept from others within
a given context.

Examples:

Term= class + distinguishing characteristic

 A classroom is a room where lessons

take place. Flag Miss.
 Flag is a piece of cloth symbolizing an Piece of cloth Miss.
organization or country.
Symbolizing an organization or country Miss.
Now, let’s try to identify the term in this formal
definition. What is the term that is being
defined in the sentence?

Good job. How about the class?

Very good. Now, the distinguishing

characteristic.

Let’s have another one, who can underline

the term, the class, and the distinguishing
characteristic in this formal definition.

 Shoes are type of material to be worn

on the feet.

to identify the structure of a formal definition.

formal definition because in writing formal

concise meaning of things. Do you get it,
