NEW Term 2 Gr.12 PRACTICAL TASK

This document provides instructions for a genetics and heredity practical task. Learners are asked to use coin flips to determine the genotypes and phenotypes of different traits for a new Smiley Face baby based on the genotypes of its heterozygous parents. Learners then draw and color their baby, answer questions about genetics concepts like incomplete dominance and genetic crosses, and explain steps in the task.

Duration: 1 hour
INSTRUCTIONS TO LEARNERS – THIS IS AN INDIVIDUAL TASK
QUESTION 1
Smiley Face Traits
(1) Use two coins to determine the genotype of a new Smiley Face to be born.
Mark one coin with an “F” and the other with an “M” to represent each of the parents. The
parents are heterozygous for all the Smiley Face traits.
(2) Flip the coins for each parent for each trait. If the coin lands with heads up, it represents a
dominant allele. A coin that lands tails up indicates a recessive allele except for the last two
traits where the heads will represent the first allele (R or P) and the tails will represent the
second allele (Y or T).
(3) Record the result for each parent by circling the correct letter. Use the results and the Smiley
Face Traits on page 4 to determine the genotype and phenotype for each trait of the new baby to
be born.

QUESTION 3
Create Your Smiley Face baby.
Use the Smiley Face Traits chart on page 4 and your results from Question 1 to draw a sketch of
your Smiley Face baby in the box. Use colour pencils to indicate the traits.

QUESTION 4
4.1 State the possible genotypes for star eyes. (2)

4.2 Give the phenotype for the Smiley Face with the genotype Tt for its smile. (1)

4.3 Which traits represent incomplete dominance? (2)

4.4 Grandma and Grandpa Smiley are heterozygous for the star eye shape. One of their
heterozygous children married a girl with blast-type eyes.
Use a genetic cross to determine the percentage of their grandchildren that could have
starry eyes. What percentage could have blast-type eyes? (7)

4.5 Baby Smiley has curly hair, but neither of her parents do!
a) Is this possible?
b) What must the genotype of her parents be?
c) What is the chance (in percentage) for Baby Smiley to have curly hair? (3)

QUESTION 5
5.1 Why do you have to flip a coin to determine which allele each parent would pass on to
the offspring? (2)

5.2 Why do you need to flip the male parent coin only to determine the sex of your Baby
Smiley Face? (2)

5.3 If you were to do this again, would your offspring (Smiley Face Baby) be exactly alike?
Explain your answer. (3)
