Marine Protection Areas: the fightback for our oceans

Protecting the diversity of marine ecosystems is vital to our planet and in the fight against climate change. It is
also essential for the billions of people who depend on the ocean for food or work. Global warming, habitat
destruction, pollution, and overfishing are just some of the major threats to our oceans. Charities and
governments are starting to invest in long-term solutions to these problems.

One solution is the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). These are internationally recognized areas of
ocean and coastal areas, where only sustainable human activities are allowed. In other words, strict rules now
control activities such as fishing or tourism to stop further damage to the environment. Some activities are
prohibited altogether.

There are currently around 9,600 MPAs which protect approximately 4% of the world’s oceans, and their benefits
are huge. They help to conserve coastlines and habitats, and protect the biodiversity of the oceans. They are a
refuge for endangered species and they protect habitats at risk of destruction from overfishing. MPAs also provide
areas for fish to breed and grow to their adult size. This has a positive impact on the number of fish available for
food in surrounding fishing areas.

When people think of Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean, about 4,000 kilometers west of Chile, the first thing
that comes to mind are the amazing Moai heads and statues of human figures, dating from around 1250.
However, the waters of Easter Island are also areas of rare biodiversity and geological interest. Here you can find
seamounts (mountains rising from the seabed but which don’t reach the ocean surface) which are up to 13 million
years old.

In 2018, the local indigenous community, the Rapa Nui, worked with the Chilean government to make this a
Marine Protected Area. It covers 720,000 square kilometres and protects Easter Island’s waters from large
companies mining in the area and from industrial-scale fishing. It allows only the Rapa Nui to continue their
sustainable fishing practices, which involve using small boats and hand lines. In this way, the culture of their
community and their livelihoods are protected as well as the environment.

Cocos Island National Park, located 550 kilometers from Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean, is another successful case
study of an MPA. With its high biodiversity, it is often described as the “Little Galapagos”. Its waters are home to
over 30 species of coral, 3 species of sea turtles, and 250 species of fish, including sharks and giant rays.

The island’s MPA status protects it from the destructive activities of tourists. They are no longer allowed to camp
or take any natural artifacts from the area. Fishing is also banned, but poachers still try to hunt sharks illegally in
the area. So, although MPAs are an important means of protecting our oceans, it seems that conservationists will
always face the challenge of illegal human activities.
