A Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 6

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to;

 Solve routine and non-routine problems involving different types of numerical

expressions and equations
 Create routine and non-routine problems involving equations

II. Subject Matter:

 Subject Matter: Solving Problems Involving Algebraic Expressions and

Equations
 Reference/s: Mathematics -Kto12 MELC, Quarter 3 Lesson 3 Week 2
 Materials: Laptop, PPT, Visual Aid
 Values: Cooperativeness and attentiveness

III. Procedure

A. Learning Activities

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Good Morning Class...” Good Morning Sir!”

a. Review/Recall:

“Yesterday we tackle about translating “Yes, sir!

verbal phrases into mathematical
expression, right?”

“Now let’s solve word problems involving

algebraic expressions and equation.” (Children listen attentively)

“But before we proceed, I have here

problems that you need to solve.”

b. Motivation

Find the value of x that will make the

given sentence true. Explain how you got
your answer.

1. X + 5 = 8
1. 3
2. X – 7 = 3
2. 10
3. 3x = 9
3. 3
4. x/2 = 18
4. 36
“very good, all your answer is correct”

“How you got your answer?”

“we reverse the operation”

“very good, class.”

“Let’s proceed to our discussion, I have

here a word problem and we’re going to
solve it involving expressions and (Pupils listen attentively)
equation.”

c. Lesson Proper

Initially, the mangoes in two baskets were

not equal. Emma counted 8 mangoes in
one basket. To make them equal, she
added 5 more mangoes in the second
basket. How many mangoes were in the
second basket before Emma added 5?

To solve the given problem, you need to

determine the value of the variable x in the
equation x + 5 = 8.

The variable represents the number of

mangoes in the second basket before
Emma added 5.

To solve the equation x + 5 = 8, you need

to find the value of the variable x. You can
do this by reversing the operation. If 5
added to x is 8, then you can get x by
subtracting 5 from 8.” (Children participating)
That is,”

X + 5 = 8 implies x = 8 – 5

Therefore, x is equal to 3. You can easily

check your answer by using substitution.
When x = 3, then 3 + 5 = 8

You can also draw a diagram to solve the

equation x + 5 = 8

x+5 x

“The diagram shows the relationship

between x + 5 and 8.”

“It shows a part-whole model.”

“Since the whole (8) and one part (5) are

known, then you can get the other part (x)
by subtraction. So, x = 8 – 5 or x = 3.

“This means that the solution to the

equation of the form x + a = b

Is x = b + (a)

Or

X=b–a

“That is, the solution is the sum of the sum

of the constant c and opposite of a.”

Another example 1:

Solve the equation x + 4 = 12

“To solve the equation, think of reversing

the operation. The solution is the sum of
12 and the opposite of 4. Hence,

X + 4 =12

X = 12 + (-4)

X = 12 – 4

X=8

“To check the result, replace x with 8 in x

+ 4 =12.”

X + 4 = 12

8 + 4 = 12
12 = 12

Example 2:

Solve the following equations by reversing

operations.

1. 2n = 10
2. N ÷ 3 = 4

Solution:

2n = 10

N = 10 ÷ 2

N=5

To check: 2 (5) = 10

10 = 10

Solution:

N÷3=4

N = 4(3)

N = 12

To check: 12 ÷ 3 = 4

4=4

“You got it, class?”

“Very good class, let’s try to solve some

equation.”

d. Application

Solve the following equation by reversing

operations.

1. N + 12 = 15
2. N – 24 = 18
3. N ÷ 12 = 4
4. 5N = 65
5. 3N – 4 =5
6. 2N + 3 = 11

“Very good class!”

“All your answer is correct”

e. Generalization

“To solve an equation, you need to find the

value of the unknown or variable in the
equation.”

“Remember, equations that have the same

solution are called equivalent equations."

“Also, you need to consider the operation

that you’re going to use when reversing
method.”

“What have you’re learned class?”

“Very good class.”

“Goodbye class”

IV. Evaluation

A. Fill in the blanks to make the sentence true.

1. If 2x = 14, then x = ____________
2. If x + 4, then x = ______________
3. If 3x + 6, then x = ______________
4. If 2x + 8 = 14, then x + 4 = ______
5. If x + 5 = 4, then -x – 5 = ________

B. Solve each equation and check the result.

1. 3n – 4 = 5
2. 2n + 5 = 17
3. n/3 – 7 = 5
4. n/2 + 8 = 30
5. 2(n + 4) = 50

C. Solve each equation and check the result.

1. 3b – 1 = 8
2. 2 (a + 5) = 18
3. 3 (x – 4) = 12
4. 25 = 8 – 4n
5. 4 + 7m = 39

2. 3b + 15 = 30
3. 8n – n = 49
4. 7a + 6 = 62
5. 9n – 7 = 74
E. Group Activity:
Write the related equation and then solve the equation. Check your answer

2. Thrice the sum of a number and 5 is 18. What is twice a number?
3. The difference of four times a number and 8 is 32. Find the number.

Find the solution to the unknown variable in each expression.
