Solving with Diagrams Solving Using Algebra

3
First, represent 4 with a simple diagram. We can solve our equation using an algebraic
method. In this method, we apply the opposite
operation to both sides of the equation in order
to isolate the variable.

The 4 that is shown represents 2𝑥. To find out 2𝑥 =

how much one x would be, we will split the

Now that we have split our into two parts, we

Problem Solve

In this chapter, you will be asked to solve a number of problems involving algebra. When
solving word problems involving algebra, we must follow these four steps:

1) Write a “let” statement. This identifies which variables you will be using and what
it will represent.

2) Write an equation. Using the variable that you identified in step 1, write an
equation that relates it to the information that you are given in the question.

3) Solve the equation. Solve the equation that you created in step 2 using the variable
method that you will be learning in this chapter.

4) Write a solution statement. Once you have found your solution in step 3, you
must present your findings in a written statement.

Example 3: A student scored 19 on a socials quiz which resulted in a grade of 76%. What
was the total number of marks on that quiz?

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 4:

Example 4: Brenden is twice as old as Mike. If their ages add to 24, how old is each boy?

Solving with a Diagram Solving with Algebra

Let us represent our equation using a diagram. We can solve the same equation using algebra
instead of diagrams. One thing to remember is
that when we are isolating a variable, we
complete our operations in the opposite order
(i.e. we use opposite BEDMAS). Yup! SAMDEB!
(We are still looking to reverse the operations
that we see.)

Notes:

There are two methods for solving equations of the form 𝑎(𝑥 + 𝑏) = 𝑐. For the first
method, you may use the distributive property to remove
The Distributive Property
the parentheses and then isolate the variable. The second
method involves dividing first. 𝑎(𝑏 + 𝑐) = 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑎𝑐

Example 1: Solve for d. 3(𝑑 + 0.4) = −3.9

Method 1: Using the Distributive Property Method 2: Dividing First

In this method, we will first use the distributive In this method, we will divide both sides of the

3(𝑑 + 0.4) = −3.9 3(𝑑 + 0.4) = −3.9

As you can see, both methods will result in the same answer.

Sometimes, you will be asked to solve an equation that involves fractions. When you are
asked to do this, it is often easier to multiply both sides of the equation by the lowest
common denominator first so that you end up working with just integers.

Notes:

Equations of the form: 𝑎𝑥 = 𝑏 + 𝑐𝑥, 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 = 𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑, and 𝑎(𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐) = 𝑑(𝑒𝑥 + 𝑓) are

unique compared to the other types of equation that we have solved in this chapter
because they contain a variable on both sides on the equals sign. In these situations, we
must collect all of the variables on one side of the equation, then solve according to
previously learned methods.

Example 1:
In this case, we collect the variables on one

note that you can collect the variables on
