Construction Safety

Prepared by: Engr. Ralph F. Tan Sanchez

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

1. Learn the fundamental topics about construction safety.

2. Understand the importance of construction safety in managing projects.
Introduction to the Topic

Construction safety aims to ensure that a construction site or the industry as a

whole is not the cause of immediate danger to the public around a construction site,
or the workers at a construction site, as well as making sure that the finished
product of construction meets required safety standards.
WHY SAFETY MATTERS?
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, SAFETY is defined as the condition of
being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss.

• SAFETY is freedom of oneself from HAZARDS.

• SAFETY is control of hazards to attain an acceptable level of RISKS.

• SAFETY is control of hazards through INJURY PREVENTION and DAMAGE

CONTROL.
Hazard –refers to anything that may likely cause personal injury or damage to
property, or their combination.

Risk – The degree of exposure or chances of exposure to hazards.

Injury Prevention – is an effort to reduce the severity of bodily injuries caused by

external mechanisms, such as accidents, before they occur.

Damage Control – is measures taken to offset or minimize damage to reputation,

credibility, or public image caused by a controversial act, remark or revelation.
Incidents vs Accidents
Incidents – an instance of something happening, an unexpected event or occurrence
that doesn't result in serious injury or illness but may result in property damage.

Accidents – an unexpected event which results in serious injury or illness of an

employee and may also result in property damage.
Different Types of Hazards
1.Physical Hazard - is an agent, factor or circumstance that can cause harm with
contact. Examples of physical hazards include slips, trips, falls.

2.Electrical Hazard - is a dangerous condition where a worker can or does

make electrical contact with energized equipment or a conductor.

3.Mechanical Hazard - is created as a result of either powered or manual (human)

use of tools, equipment or machinery and plant. An example of a mechanical
hazard is: contact and/or entanglement with unguarded moving parts on a
machine.
4. Biological Hazard - or biohazard, is a biological substance that poses a threat to
the health of living organisms, primarily humans. This could include a sample of
a microorganism, virus or toxin that can adversely affect human health.

5. Chemical Hazard - a type of occupational hazard caused by exposure to

chemicals in the workplace. Exposure to chemicals in the workplace can cause
acute or long-term detrimental health effects.
6. Ergonomics - are physical conditions that may pose risk of injury to the
musculoskeletal system, such as the muscles or ligaments of the lower back,
tendons or nerves of the hands/wrists, or bones surrounding the knees, resulting
in a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).

7. Behavioral - It describes as hazard cause by action of a person. For example, an

incorrect procedure of using forklift may possess harm / threat.
Unsafe Acts and Conditions
UNSAFE ACTS – violation of safe procedure

• Act of Omission - omitted the action which resulted in an accident

• Act of Commission - committed the action which result in an accident

UNSAFE CONDITIONS – seen as the situation or source of containing the hazard

of force.
Hazard Control Measure
Risk Assessment
What is a Risk Assessment?
Risk Assessment is a term used to describe the overall process or method where
you:

• Identify hazards and risk factors that have the potential to cause harm (Hazard
Identification).

• Analyze and evaluate the risk associated with that hazard (Risk Analysis and Risk
Evaluation).

• Determine the appropriate ways to eliminate the hazard, or control the risk when
the hazard cannot be eliminated (Risk Control)
