Title: Analyse the performance of three phase 5 level Cascaded H bridge
MLI
Aim: Development of Simulink model and analysis of performance of 5 level cascaded H
bridge MLI
Theory: One phase of 5 level cascaded H bridge MLI is shown in fig 1. It consists of 2

Fig. 1 Five level diode clamped MLI

H bridges connected in cascade. Each bridge is supplied from isolated DC supply. This
multilevel inverter used to increase the voltage handling capacity of inverter with low voltage
blocking capacity of each switch. As one phase of MLI consists of 4 complementary pairs
and hence 4 switching are generated to control the voltage and frequency of the MLI.

Switching of the inverter for different voltage levels are shown in Table 1

Control circuit:
A) Multiple carrier Wave Generation
Four in-phase carrier waves (Triangular Waves) of 5 KHz frequency are generated with the
help of schematic diagram as shown in Fig 2. Pulse generator has a frequency of 5 KHz with
amplitude of 20,000 is selected. A constant value of 10000 is subtracted from the pulse
generator output to obtain a square wave of 10 KHz with amplitude of +/- 10000. This square
wave is integrated with the help of integrator to with initial value of (0) to obtain the
triangular wave of 5 KHz with 0 to 1 magnitude. Other carrier waves of amplitude (1 to 2),
(0 to -1) and (-1 to - 2) are obtained as shown in Fig. 4.

Figure 3: Block Schematic for PWM switching signal generation for one leg of the
Inverter
Figure 4: Modulating wave and carrier waves
b) Switching Signal Generation
Multiple carrier waves are compared with a modulating sinusoidal wave of 50 Hz to
generate the switching signal as shown in Fig 3. This will generate the switching signals for
one leg of the inverter. The other leg switching signals are generated by comparing multiple
carrier waves with phase shifted modulating wave. Modulation Index of the inverter is
controlled by controlling the magnitude of the modulating wave.

B) Procedure for constructing Simulink diagram

1) Construct 2 H bridges of inverter with 8 IGBT/diode as shown in Fig 1.
2) DC voltage source, Vdc =100 Volts.
3) Complete the power circuit of one phase of inverter.
4) Construct the control circuit for one phase of inverter.
5) Observe the (Van) Phase voltage of the one phase of the Inverter.
6) Make the subsystem of above.
7) Repeat the subsystem for other two phases.
8) Connect the RL load at the output of MLI
